I know what you mean about afraid to look!

What really hit me as strange about the price jump was that I was
filling at a station at $2.41 and the place was pretty busy.  The
station directly across the road was $2.66 and was damn near as busy
as the one I was at.  WHY would you willingly pay an extra $.25/gallon
to not cross the road?????

The greater Milwaukee area is typically $2.59/9 for regular, with
diesel a penny more.  Premium is 2.75/9.
Comng back from the show at the train museum last Sunday, I found gas
for 2.34/9 just inside of the IL line.  The Lark had 1/4 tank showing
when I pulled in and still took $28.00 worth.  I don't recall ever
putting that much money in any tank, at one time.

Here in Indianapolis on Friday I saw it from $2.45 -$2.60. Diesel was
$2.29. Just about 10 days ago it dipped to $1.99 for one day!!! then
went back to $2.39 a day later!!! GEE I wish gas sales would slow down
like car sales. Employee Gas pricing for everyone!!! I here that dealer
cost for LP gas is around 80 cents a gallon, maybe I should convert the
Commander to run on LP.

I really think people are in such shock over prices that they just stop
and buy.  The idea of competiton and free market, etc, etc. seems to
counter all that the petrolium industry stands for. They have got us
and they know it. Everybody is making huge profits the oil companies,
the middle eastern oil producers and yet the price keeps going up and
up. It violates all that our type of economy was designed to be. So why
shop for lower prices,  you gotta have it, supply and demand does not
apply.  So people have just given up trying to make the traditional
economic tools work.

Supposedly the increase in demand from China and India are creating a
shortage in oil supply which in turn is driving up oil prices.  What do you
suppose drivers in those two countries are paying for gas?  I dread thinking
of my heating oil bills this coming winter.
I just poured the last gas from my last five-gallon can in the Gravely
yesterday and I still have a bunch of mowing to do.  I was waiting for the
price to come down before filling the cans again (sigh/sob).  I guess I'll
siphon some from the Studebakers <G>.

There is no way that demand is up by 15-20% over a month's time.

This whole thing is driven by speculation coupled with the
administration's total sell out to the oil industry a few days ago.
They know that they have free reign and they're exercising it.

I'll betcha that both houses of congress will shift majorities in '06.

There is much difference when it comes to both political parties giving
away the store.  The Democrats are guilty of appeasement and sleeping
with the Chinese (who do not have our best interests in mind) during the
Clinton years and the continuing systematic erosion of our defense
infrastructure (beginning with Bush I).

Bush is in the pockets of big oil and big business in general.

Reagan (who inherited a horrible foreign relation/economical mess from
carter) was the last guy that had a vision for America the previous
probably being JFK.

Kerry (to me and most VN veterans) was the equivalent of a bucket of pig vomit.

And to stay slightly on topic, Bush I drove to Texas in a Studebaker...

There is an angle that can reduce your gasoline cost 8% across the
board if you live in a market "served" by Speedway/SuperAmerica.

Here's how it works: First you apply for (and get) a Speedway/
SuperAmerica Platinum MasterCard. When you use it to buy 'most anything
(including fuel) at a Speedway/
SuperAmerica Gas Station, you get a 4% rebate on your credit card bill.

But DON'T use your S/SA MasterCard to buy gasoline right from the pump.
Instead, go inside and buy one of their prepaid fuel cards. Then, use
that prepaid fuel card at the pump. Those cards are sold at a 4%
discount; a $50 fuel card costs $48.

DO use your Speedway/SuperAmerica MasterCard to pay the $48 you owe
them for the prepaid fuel card. Because that fuel card is a purchase at
a Speedway/SuperAmerica station, that $48 purchase is subject to the 4%
card rebate, too.

Bottom line: If you do it this way, you get a total of 8% off the price
of the gasoline you buy, and you don't even have to pay THAT until the
credit card bill comes due.

8% total discount amounts to 20 cents per gallon on $2.50 gasoline; not
bad.

"All the Above" is no hocus-pocus; I've been buying gasoline at
Speedway like that for many years now, and that's exactly how it works.
(Plus, you can sign up for the Speedy Rewards program in certain
markets and get points toward free merchandise or gasoline discounts.
The pre-paid fuel cards don't count as a purchase toward Speedy
Rewards, but it IS credited as a purchase when you actually use the
card's value to buy something, including gasoline.) BP

Pretty slick.  Unfortunately I don't have any Speedway/SuperAmericas near
me.  However, I do get a modest break on gas by using my Citi Platinum card-
gives me 5% back on gas purchases paid at the pump.

Being in an energy related business, we have closed circuit TV, that
gives prices all day long. As of 8/11/2005 barrel oil prices were:
$65.80.  A month ago $58.92, while a year ago it was $44.80.

Natural gas prices, per $MMbtu:  As of 8/11/2005 $9.30, Month ago
$7.50, Year ago $5.61.

If you heat with natural gas....do the math. <sigh>

I guess I would rather pay the money, than have them ration it, or run
out completely. <groan>

Regular gas, yesterday in Calgary, heart of the Canadian oil industry:
98.9 cents per liter, about $3.10 USD per U.S, gallon.

Edmonton is usually a few cents cheaper, as that's where the
refineries are.

One thing to remember:  high prices like these help keep high-cost
producers like the U.S. and Canada humming along, with lots of
exploration drilling and production activity. If the crude price
really tanks, there will be a big drop off in exploration, and
marginal wells will be shut in. End result: unemployment at home, and
a larger proportion of our fuel dollar going offshore.

I can look forward to a busy Winter, which means I get paid well, and
can in turn afford Studebaker parts. <G>

bet we are gonna see some SERIOUS unemployment..
got to buy gas, but there goes the 'discretionary money' the
movie out, dinner out, the mini vacation, so those and other
businesses are going to suffer, and with lack of customers, what
does one do? lay off..which creates a vicious circle..

a quarter million? jobs were created last month.. NONE of which
were 'production type'', but were waitress, cleaning, and the
like..IE, the low paying ones..

For the past three years, the oil industry in the US has had record
profits and I would like to know just how much they put into upgrading
the so called "tired" infrastructure.

I for one would love to see a windfall profits tax where any handouts
would have to be justified.  Just a few weeks ago, Bush stated that the
oil companies did not need additional incentives and yet he just signed
the energy bill into law that provided just that.

That's the same as the prices here in the north western corner of WA between

using him for my daily driver.  That 170 cid flathead and rear end out of a
