Well after talking with the insurance people at AON, they have determined
that the Hawk would be classified as modified. Why ? you might ask, because
it has a hang on A/C unit.I tried to explain to the office people that all
Studes had hang on AC units, except for the Avanti, and it was just a hang
on AC built into the console. But I couldn't keep arguing, because the
Hawk's is a Lincoln Mercury unit. But it looks pretty close.
So my question is , were all AC units put on by the dealers, or were some
put on in the factory. And would a build sheet show that.
Also in the state of Kansas, you can use a tag from the year of the car for
an antique tag. But Karin also got a stern warning that "If the car is
modified, you will not be able to keep the antique tag". Boy people are
picky anymore.
Wait till they see the Turner brakes and radial tires.
PS by the way they missed the Chrome air cleaner and Eldebrock 1406 with
elect. choke.

The AC kits were often installed by the dealer, but were otherwise
the same as on the assembly line. They even came with the hoses
"precharged' with freon.

That's all absolutely ridiculous. Aftermarket add-on air conditioners were
probably more common than factory integrated units then. Even the early 64
1/2 Mustangs had hang-on units from the factory. What insurance company is
telling you that an add-on ac makes it modified? I think in judging an
incorrect ac could cost you authenticity points, but certainly wouldn't push
you into modified. J.C. Taylor has never asked anything like that on any of
my cars. By their thinking my '64 Daytona Wagonaire (which I have owned
from new) would be modified because I replaced the all-white steering wheel
with a red and white one. I also installed wider wheels and put and
electronic ignition system on it- more modified?
Reminds me of 1965, in Hawaii, when I bought a hang-on tachometer to put on
my Wagonaire the salesman told me I needed a state modification permit to
install it. Guess who installed it anyhow with no such permit.
And the vintage tag? Again- ridiculous. Around here the only thing that
determines the antique plates/use of vintage plates is the age of the car
(and of course they can be used for daily drivers). My son's somewhat
modified '79 Corvette has antique plates on it as does his '72 Satellite
Sebring with Cragar mags.

We went with AON. Plus they reduced the amount they would insure if for
from what we asked. But we expected that and asked for a bit more than what
we thought they would go so we would have some option if they did reduce it.
Thanks for your input though. Makes me better in knowing that we are not
the only ones who thought it was strange.

Well,
I know that in the province of British Columbia you cannot get an
antique plate for your car if it has been "modified" by the addition
of a modern radio.
But then, B.C. has been governed by idiots for long time.
