A friend of mine has an LS1 6 speed which he will sell to me for $2500. A
steal of a price to be sure. I have never had a brand X motor in a Stude
before, but this one is sure luring me in. What do ya'll think? Just
opinions, please don't cus me out. I may deserve it, but please don't. It
might hurt my feelings. ( Sure, like I have any ) ;)

An excellent power and torque powerplant.
One of the ugliest visual contraptions I have ever seen.
Hipo and dress up stuff is still new and on the pricey side.
No dress up stuff will hide all that stuff hanging all over it.

Jeff, the best way to cover up the top have of the engine to make it
beautiful is a Eaton supercharger! :)

Wasn't there a yellow coupe at Reedsville a couple of years ago with that setup?

Sounds like a good project, especially in a '53-'54 coupe. A very-modified
'53 coupe turned up at the Reedsville swap meet in 2001 with a Corvette Z06
engine and who-knows-what-else installed under the skin. It was bright
yellow (Jeff Rice, go ahead and drool, but not on the car) and extremely
well done. I don't know who the car belonged to. Pictures:

Here's some comparison of the LS1 and Z06 engines. Makes interesting
reading.

I guess reading is all I can do this week since everyone else went to
Spokane (boo hoo, wish I was there!). Anybody else out there feeling like
they are missing something? It sure is quiet in here...

Isn't that the one with the mild top chop and the laid back door posts and
squeezed quarter windows?
It is a nice piece of machinery.

The LS-l is a super engine, and the price offered for the eng/trans is
super. Be aware that the LS-1 engine has many differences from a LT1 or
earlier SBC. And look into the stand alone computer and ECM wiring to do
the swap, dependent on the year of the engine, etc.. Still a good idea,
just be aware of alot of peripheral costs.

It would be going into my 54 coupe. The guy told me to be sure I had VERY
good brakes before I put this package under the hood. I assured him that
12 inch ventillated rotors with Chrysler calipers were quite adept at
stopping the car from over 130 mph now, so I wasn't too worried about
that. BTW, the package comes with computer, wiring harness and any
accessories I want. I was thinking of selling off the whole injections
system and computer and using the new Edlebrock carb, intake and
management system instead. They claim it makes over 400 hp. That could
make me happy. Still debating though.

I'm going with a LS2 (6.0L) with the 6-speed in my '64 Daytona. I've seen
a
few '53-'54's with the LS1. These are great engines. There are engine
covers made of carbonfiber that can also be painted as you wish (if you
run the EFI and want to cover the coils). Painless sells a stand alone
engine harness to clean things up.

A friend in TX has a similar set-up in his '53. It runs like a spotted ape,
and gets 32 mpg.

I am getting ready to put a 2000 LS1 into my '53. Project will start in
late October after the cruisin season is done. For some great info and
resources regarding the LSx motors go to www.ls1tech.com. They have a
conversion forum there with lots of very helpful folks. Email me to share
ideas and what I have learned.

Hi Pat. I'm building a '54 HT with an Avanti R1/T-5 setup just a little
north of you in Chico. Working on strengthening the frame at this point
and will be remounting the body very soon! -Will

Sounds like a great project, I'd love to see that sometime Will,
I am planning to come up to the show in Durham on Sep 18th, if you get a
chance to come by, look me up. I may have the reddest '53 in existence, you
can't miss it.

I think that will make a very nice set up. But to make it really nice, you
need to get your hands on a freshly restored 400 point Speedster and pull
the boat anchor out to make room for the LS1 and six speed tranny.
good luck

From my experience with the Chevy 383 stroker in a coupe you'll find
the weight off the front of the car makes it a much better driver.
