staring to think of putting a/c in the hawk. I've seen Ray's info on the
nc page. from the parts catalog, it appears the hawk and lark evap
units aren't the same. As I'm looking to put a/c in an R2 hawk, it won't
be original anyway ( any suggestions for a bracket besides diy?). will a
lark evap look "ok", or should i hold out for a hawk evap? what should I
expect to pay for a good condition evap unit?
thx, Jeff ( 4 stude or close-to-studes and only the 89 convert avanti
has a/c...)
I would use a new one. Who knows what's inside an old one?
Order one near or bigger than stock and make your own mounts.

Alex, I think you're referring to the condensor - yes, I'll get a new
one. I'm referring to the under-dash unit.
thx, Jeff

I'd be interested to see where you are going to put the a/c compressor and
the bracketry.

The Lark Evaporator will "fit". A Hawk one would be a better choice. Any
62-64 unit will do. I think the difference is the position of the fans-
(I think)the Lark scroll cages are mounted lower.
The bottom of the Hawk dash will need to be releaved for them to fit.
This just involves cutting some fiberglass below the defroster/heat
switches... where the dash panel changes shape near the middle.
Here's a Lark unit in a '62 Hawk: I didn't trim the dash on this one-
but should have. I didn't have an example to look at, but later saw a
couple original installs where the dash was trimmed for the AC unit to
sit higher..
Expect to pay $150-$250 for the evaporator (if you can find one). Price
will be comensurate with condition.

The drop-brackets for the AC unit are simple- they are just 1"
strap-iron bent like C-channel. I'll try to get a photo- but don't have
an AC equipped GT handy.
With the R2 Supercharger mounted in the "V"- all brackets must be
custom-made. Noone makes them. The problem isn't the AC Compressor- it's
adding the alternator. The AC will just go where the Alt is now.
I have done this twice- On a '57 GH, I used an original Stude
Prestolite. On My Ugly Truck (MUT), I was able to piggyback a Delco to
the compressor's 2nd pully. In this configuration, you won't have any
hood-clearance problems, but you will need to trim the fan shroud. You
also may wish to shim the front end (body)up at the front fender frame
pads and radiator support. Just a little here makes a big difference in
clearance. You can also lower the motor mounts, by looking for some
thinner ones. I used 1957 Chevy mounts with custom-sized washers on the
GH (and My Hawk when the SC engine was in it). I don't have any
clearance problems on Ugly.

***You cannot use the AC compressor adjuster from below (as used on MUT)
on a Hawk. It hits the inner fender. You will need to create an adjuster
from above.
It's alot of custom fabrication, but it really isn't too difficult. You
will need a drill press and a welder. The drill press makes it easier to
drill more accurate holes- for alignment purposes. I usually vice-grip
my brackets together to get the alignment- then tack-weld them in place.
Once removed, they can be fully welded.

$150-$250 !!! Yikes...
You could have an R134 unit built for somewhere's around $150 or so and
convert the thing to R134 for that kind of money.

the reason I asked price is that there's a complete lark a/c setup on
craigslist (sf) in santa cruz for $300. think I'll hold out for a hawk
unit. Ben Starr in N. Cal has a/c in his R2 Hawk. I'm going to visit him
and look at his bracket setup. I was hoping someone would say the avanti
r2 bracket would work with minor mods...

Gee Jeff... I can get a brand new fender for a Volkswagon Beetle for
$40... why would you want to pay more than that for a nice used Coupe
Express front fender? <G>
And.... the original evaps work just fine with 134... They just need a
good flushing- and I've only had to replace (1) expansion valve...
otherwise, in 8-10 installations of old units, and conversions of
existing AC systems.. I've had no problems at all.
PS... "I" wouldn't pay $250 for a used evaporator (NOS maybe)... he
asked what the asking prices are... I obliged...
I'd buy all I can get (in decent shape) for $150....

I picked up a used Lark type that was used in a Hawk for $190 and it is
in great shape. I have yet to find a Hawk unit that I can afford......
there was a NOS one listed in the July TW along with the R3 Ananti,
some guy moving to Trinidad from MI. Anyway I contacted him and he was
asking.......... hold your breath..........................$1,500 for
the evaporator and condensor and that was it, no pulleys, compressor,
etc. I emailed back and said, just was I was looking for, but.......
out of my price range. I think he will be taking it with him to
Trinidad.

Ray, not sure if there is a difference in the back end of the
evaporators betweent the Hawk and Lark units. From what I have been
able to fish out the front controls and bezels are the only differences
with the Hawk also having a bit of a lower lip that juts out. However,
I do not have a Hawk unit to compare the Lark type I have (which is
going in my Hawk). You can see both types of units in TW: '64 AC
units in April '97 (Hawk) and Feb. '93 (Lark) TW.

Ray:
I took a closer look at the Lark evaporator I have and it is possible
to flip the fan cages over and make them higher on the back of the
unit. I think that is what I will do before I mount mine. This should
elivate the problem of cutting into the Hawk dash.
