I am installing a new ($4,900) 383 - 450 hp fast burn crate engine in a
65 Chevelle for a friend of mine, He had to go to Kansas City to get it
because there wasn't a dealer in or around Tulsa that had one,
This would be like going to South Bend in 1964 to pick up an R- 4,
I told him to get a tool to spin the oil pump, which he did,  i go over
to his house last night to help him and he already put his polished
intake on and this engine is looking real good with  aluminum heads,
I try to spin the oil pump and can not get any oil pressure,  now this
is a brand new engine and under warranty, so i tell him we should call
the dealer in the morning to see what he should do,
So we both call Superior Chevrolet and tell them the problem, they give
me a couple of people to talk to and i explain the problem, and i ask if
i can pull the oil pan and see why the oil pump won't pick up the oil,
One guy says NO it will void your warranty, the other says  did you
prime the filter, i tell him yes we did, go ahead and pull the pan and
call me in the  morning, it wont void the warranty,
So tonight i pull the pan and the pump has dropped down about an inch
and is resting on  the windage tray, the bolt is laying in the pan, Who
ever put this thing together forgot to tighten the oil pump,
Now we have oil pressure,
Cant wait to hear what the dealer has to say,

This has also happened in the Charlotte area.  A driving school that I did
some work for had bought more than several of "racing" crate motors for use.
They found two motors back to back with the same situation as Bob described
that I know of.  Tried to prime motor and no oil pressure,  called local
dealer and they were allowed to open the first motor.  When second one
presented itself, they called the dealer and told him to get his "@ss" over
there at once.  Evidently someone on the line must have it in for GM or
can't operate a wrench.  These were not built outside the US if that had
come to your mind.  bs

If GM's system is anything like ours at each step of the manufacturing
process the operator has to "sign off" on completing that step (actually
it's scanned into our manufacturing tracking system).  It should be
quite easy for someone with the right access to put in the SN of those
engines and find out exactly who put in those oil pumps and when.

If they do find out the person that did that operation, he will be the last
person who just quit.
