Service letter project

I found my long lost collection of 47-68 service letters that were to
be used for a IC project. (Henry Votel had them, and did not know I was
looking for them.)  I'd like to finish getting them all scanned on to a
CD's so they can be sold. The problem is a lot of folks helped when it
was being done as a freebie for the IC Club and I feel they deserve
something for their labor. IF the project is ever done, I'd like the
NG's input on a fair way to market the CD's. Since we no longer have a
IC club, I was thinking a share of the profit could go to the
dehydration station, could be held for NG emergencies, could be split
with those that helped, idea's ???  If none of the above makes sense, I
could pay to have the CD's made from my collection from scratch to
avoid any conflicts.

How about a donation to the New SDC Museum?

I thought about that, but free beer just seemed like a better idea
some how. <g>  We do still have a few hundred in the bank from the IC
that we need to get rid of too.

It didn't..
It's just dormant.
Are you volunteering to help?
No one helping is why it is dormant.

Probably could beginning next month as I will be "officially retired."
Still will work but only on things that interest me...

I can't pin point the date, it just sort of died from lack of
support and I'm just sweeping up and turning off the lights.

Studeman - 21 Aug 2005 19:35 GMT
As one that put alot of effort into this project... Here's my "opinion".

I don't want a dime... and I could care less what you do with the scans
I did. Jeff Rice and Jeff (Groth? I believe) did some of the
scanning/OCR work- and they can voice their opinions for themselves.
I doubt it would be feasible to pay someone to re-do the work, and
recoupe the investment anytime soon. There's no need to re-scan/OCR the
documents- THEY ARE ALL DONE. But, if you can find someone to assemble
the info... at reasonable cost... the project might get done.

Most of the Service bulletins and letters were yours to begin with. I
did come up with some fillers for the missing ones, and some that you
did not have (very early and later one's).

I still have ALL the scans. It's very simple to just put them on a CD.
HOWEVER, That was never the problem. The trouble came when trying to
assemble them into a user-friendly form. A searchable database, Perhaps
assembled like a parts manual, etc...
Just copying them to a CD is a poor way to browse them. They are very
hard to browse (freeware-Acrobat Reader is very slow), and there's no
way to indicate where the needed information is housed. For example- If
you want info on your 1954's brakes... you may not find any info on the
1954 Bulletins... That info may be on a 1956 Bulletin. OR, you're having
trouble with your 1963 Hawk hydrovac- and the "answer" is on a 1957
Bulletin. ... so you have to open and read 10-20 bulletins and letters-
in hopes you'll find something there.
I spent ALOT of time creating the INDEXES that show the contents of each
of the bulletins/letters. Each bulletin could have anywhere from 1-10
different subjects on it. I never completed the task of indexing ALL the
bulletins and service letters- as this was taking HOURS and HOURS of
finding the info and hand-typing the index. But, I feel it's the only
way to make the scans reasonably useable.  The indexes can easily be
made searchable, and the filenames make the data (fairly) easily
retreivable. I'm just not enough of a programmer to create this
searchable database... which is why the scans were sent to Henry.

IF the CD is ever marketed- (*I believe)Any profits should be put into
an account, and used as this NG see's fit... anyone(here) can suggest
where the funds be used, and a consensus taken as to whether it's a
cause we would want to support. I think we're a reasonable group... and
we won't be talking about thousands of $$$ anyway...

I too don't necessarily care where the money goes, but since I spent a
lot of time scanning/ocr'ing many years worth(9 or 10), I'd like to see
the thing finished and made available to the general stude public ( or,
if that's never going to happen, I'd like an un-indexed set for my own
reference). I've offered multiple times in the last 2 or 3 years to help
do that. Let's decide on something and blame Mickey for the delay <g>

I didnt help at all...lol...was before my time here.
Just a suggestion here that can be used or discarded,if there is money in
the IC account why not use that money to pay a professional (non Stude
guy)to do the figuring out of a user friendly system.Sounds like all the
hard work has been done so a pro should be able to come up with a system
that will work easily.Having it done by someone other than a NG'r would give
everyone a chance to grumble about how it was done without that person
reading about it<G>

I don't want any money either....
Well, I take that back.
I want a million dollars....cash.
Unmarked bills. Marked bills. I don't care <lol>...

Maybe a complementary copy of the completed project would be a nice thank
you for the hundreds of hours spent on this project (times X people).
Maybe a mention in the credits section?
Nahhhh.. (What about the Stude people that made it in the first place. We
should thank them!)

Some projects should not be for profit only.

Ok guys, JP

I think that I could get one of my senior or junior students to finish
the project. All I would have to do is give them a project grade and a
certificate. School starts after Labor Day and I have a few candidates
who could do the work. What say ye? Flathead

Heh heh...  Sounds like me when I used to be assigned interns at work.
Get them to do all the tedious stuff!

John,

I didn't participate in this project, and I should have.  The same goes for
the IC Club.  I regret both, now.  Hats off the those that gave of their
time and efforts to make both of these a reality.

Perhaps, it isn't to late to get things back on track with both the project
and the club.  Both are very worth while endeavors from the stand point of a
collective group of people such as this.  Especially, when you consider the
mandate by which this group was formed in the first place.

My two cents my not hold much water, but I'd think that this group as a
whole should benefit.  Studedom will certainly benefit from the project.
Any profits should be used by the club and it's membership to enhance the
club and by vote any endeavor it deems to undertake.  Museum (Grrrrrrr)
donations, dehydration station, club booth setup, T-Shirts (and sales), club
restoration projects, club auctions, other charities as seen fit.  I'm with
you about the free beer at meets!

Bo, that was the plan, but the board was pretty much on their own when
it came to IC business. We even resorted to bribes to get folks to
attend the online meetings, all to no avail. Like most chapters, the
members like the perks, they just don't want to be bothered with
helping. To be fair, the kind of members that would be the most help,
were already too busy doing other work in the hobby to join in.

Well, I'm sure we can find something for you to "Pinch", err partake in.
There's some really fine gals down on D Avenue that'll let you pinch them
for $20 bucks apiece.

I'm way past that stage...  Too old and too scared.  I'd probably break
something (on me).
