When I bought my 64, 10 years ago, I did the radiator soon after I bought
it.  The shroud had a section cut out of the bottom.  I thought that it was
done because there was a clearance issue or someone didn't want to remove
the fan to remove the shroud.

I have seen quite a few cars with the shroud cut like mine was.  I say was,
because I sectioned a piece in the complete the circle.  I'm wondering if
that impedes flow through the bottom of the radiator.  It's so close down
there that I can imagine the air running into the wall I created and
creating a flow issue.

Are most of the shrouds out there cut open on the bottom??  I'm especially
interested in the Stude cars.

Ernie, my 63 is whole. Maybe the bottom is cut out of the bottom of your
so the shroud could be removed without taking the fan off (?) I haven't
noticed any cut shrouds, but I can't really say I've look for them.

I've seen three cut this way. One I did myself after much frustration
getting it off when I first got into Studes. It allows the shroud to be
removed without removing the fan.     KM

Ernie;
I checked my 64 (#5367) and the fan shroud does not complete encircle
the fan - only about 3/4 or a bit more.  By the looks of it, the bottom
section, if there, would not have been very wide.  With the way the
radiator is sloped and the balancer on the engine, there is only 3-4
inches between the two.  I couldn't imagine it affecting the air flow
much.

The Parts Catalog lists three fan shrouds.  One is for a 17" five blade
fan P/N 1556021,(which is standard for all models), one for a 14" five
blade fan, P/N 1560547(listed as being for R3 and R4), and one for a
17" seven blade fan, P/N 1563111(listed for all models), both being
optional.  I have the 17" seven blade fan and this shroud LOOKS
original and uncut.  Any idea which one you have?

Cheers,
Rich

The incomplete shrouds I've seen were all cut the same way and didn't look
like someone had taken a saw to them.  I'm inclined to think that the
factory did this.

It is that closeness at the bottom that makes me wonder if having the shroud
no more than a few inches from the radiator isn't creating a restriction, or
some kind of pressure spot because the could be pushing air through the
radiator rather than drawing it through.  The air would get drawn through,
hit a wall and either stay there or just swirl around down there never
getting cool because it is being circulated around the radiator over and
over again.

Easy enough to see if it makes a difference because the piece I sectioned in
was riveted in place and I'm going to remove it.  Stay Tuned...

   Hello Ernie
I have a 64 r2 avanti my fan shroud is also missing the piece on the
bottom.A freind of
mine that works on studebakers has a 64 r2 that he is working on for
a customer and
the bottom piece is also missing. When i had a overheating problem i
thought the shroud
had something to do with it.The overheating turned out be a few
other things.

Well, I'm convinced that the missing piece is intentional.  I'm going to
remove it and see if it makes any difference.  My car does not overheat but
it seems that it runs warmer than it should at times when it should be
running cooler.  I will update , thanks everyone.

There are two Avanti fan shrouds, a full, and a "horseshoe style" (open
on the bottom)

John, do you think it was to speed up production, avoid clearance issues or
to provide some cooling benefit?
