In reading the posts on no first place GT Hawks, I am wondering if I am
naive, dense or just out of line with the assumption that there is a
different standard for the GT Hawk from the other models? Is there a
higher standard for the GT or is there a bias against this model? I am
just curious as I have never had mine judged and probabely never will
but would like to understand the standards. Thanks

Bob, I don't think there is a higher standard.
You have several factors at work:
1. GT Hawk is a fairly popular car within SDC, lots of survivors.
2. It is a classy and luxurious car, which tends to invite owners to
make a real effort to restore them well.
3. Authenticity for them seems to be well-documented.
4. They are a fairly complicated car compared to other Studes of the
same age, so there are more things that can be wrong.
Lack of firsts at Spokane? Only 4 GTs were even entered in concourse.
Many really fine GTs were there and NOT entered. Could be that
controversy over past GT judging had a "chill" effect on entries this
year.
I really think the problem is more one of perception rather than any
kind of actual bias. Why would SDC want the owners of any class of
Studebaker to be continually disappointed with judging?

I don't know why the SDC would want that, but the growing trend at Zone
Meets is fun judging, or none at all. Must be a reason!

What is "fun judging"?

Still the best way for "fun judging" is Peoples Choice. This is what they
do at NC's Tri-State meet every year. And if you don't come in first on a
"people's choice" you stand up at the banquet and explain in front of
everyone in attendance why you think they were wrong and why you deserve a
1st place award... and they'll give you one if for no other reason than to
get you to sit down and shut up.

In the Zone Meets (and other car shows) I've attended with "fun
judging" - every car got a trophy or award of some kind. The award
titles would be amusing, and usually pertained loosely (or even
specifically) to the car winning the award.
Some examples - a show at a dogtrack/ all the titles had "dog" or a dog
reference in them, i.e. "Best Dog on the Porch", "Top Dog of the Meet",
"Tail-wagger of Show", etc.
At another meet the awards were for "Most Beautiful Glovebox", "Best
Convertible (if you cut the top off)", "Best Stump Puller" (for a tow
truck), "Poodle-skirts Choice" (for 50's style), etc.
This type of meet requires some brainstorming beforehand to get the
plaques made, and what type of car to win said award. The point is -
nobody has to work at judging and everybody gets an award. It's kind of
a win/win situation for all involved.

Gordon,
If you could only answer the question. We'd all know why this is the way it
is, has been and likely will be.

My opinion can only be based on the past judging team. Two members
of the team thought they were GT Hawk experts and were out to show the
entrants just how skilled they were at finding every possible defect.
There are a few classes that I could judge fairly and never award a
first place trophy if I set the standards high enough. The standards bar
may move up every year, but don't get ten years ahead of where the cars
are in one or two classes. <g>
