Have a fellow that runs the Mexican Road Race and is looking for one of
these to put in his Stude.  Also needs a floor shifter.  If anyone out
there has either, let me know and I'll put you in touch with him.  He
is located in Pennsylvania.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm not aware of any floor shifter that
will fit a T85/OD without some custom work on the bracket to clear the
OD solenoid.  I was investigating this on my 56J before I got
distracted by a '55 coupe.

just for curiosity's sake I'd love to hear more about this guy's
project, it sounds like fun.  I would love to do something like that
someday!

Hurst made a shifter installation kit for T- 85 OD's.  I have just the
mounting brackets - no arms or rods, which may be the same as 4 speed, T-10
parts for an application that used the rear mounting location on the tail
shaft..  The brackets were bought for a '49 Lincoln OD that a friend used in
his drag car 40 years ago, and are still on it.  I'll take a look and see if
the solenoid is; or if there is room for it.  I'll be surprised if there
isn't!
Hopefully, neither one of us is confusing the T-85 with the T-89, which
was a more popular Stude trans.  A version of the T-85 was the Ford
Interceptor trans. and pretty popular.  The main case and side cover were
adapted by Borg/Warner to make the T-10, 4 speed.  Someone, (Beatty?), even
made the parts to adapt the T-85 OD to the back of a 4 speed; but I don't
know how many were sold.

I wonder how that worked since one of the gears(4th?) on the T-10 seems
to be in the extension housing???

The T-85C/T-89C(in truck use anyway) shared the same case(casting says
T-85C ).

Perhaps you were referring to the lighter duty T-86 which has a top cover.

Reverse, in a stock T-10, 4 speed, is in the tailshaft housing.  The OD
kit had a thick adaptor plate between the main case and T-85 OD unit, with
the reverse sliding gear in it.  The kit reached at least the prototype
stages; and was written up in "Hot Rod", in the '60's.  I don't remember
seeing it advertised.

I have a Ford T-85 O.D. out of a 63 Ford NASCAR that I bought from Bob
Patton about 1983 but I removed the overdrive to put it on a T-10 4 speed
to make a 4 O.D. in my 63 Champ.The adapter I got from Tom Beatty. I turned
Lional Stone on to Tom when he was closing up shop and Stone bought the
molds and is still making the adapters. If the guy can find a R-11 O.D.  I
have the the rest of the pieces. You can catch me through the SDC forum as
Alan.

I'm with you Pat...I'm turning over 3 grand on the highway with my T-10
and 3.54 rear.  I'd love to run some 411's and an OD in the T-10.

What are the specifics on the T-10 OD conversion?

-Dick-
A.J. - 27 Aug 2005 01:18 GMT
Lionel Stone has the whole kit including out put shaft but you have to
supply the R-11 O.D. forget about it in an Avanti but the new Tremic 5
speeds bolt right up with a change in pilot bearings to the Chevy Stude
housings that the T-10"s bolt up to.   AJ
John Poulos - 27 Aug 2005 01:21 GMT
Even if you could do the conversion, it won't fit with the X member
frame. (Think 5 speed conversion)

Hmm!  Learn something new every day.  Yes I was definitely thinking
T-85.  I am guessing that Hurst no longer makes this kit?

I doubt it's still offered.  There should be part #'s on the individual
parts.  Their kits were boxed up without shifters, which were somewhat
interchangeable.  When you bought a kit, the speed shop put the shifter in
the box.  I guess there was less money tied up in inventory that way, since
the shifter was the expensive part..
I have an old "Synchroloc", (sp?), with rods for a light duty Ford OD,
that I can provide with the T-85 brackets.  Lord knows where all this would
put the lever in a Stude.  But the race car probably has bucket seats
anyway.

I have a floor shift conversion in my Champ that is hooked to a T-90.
It works great!
Many companies, including J.C. Whitney, used to sell these kits.

T-90 is a whole nother critter. Its part of the T-86 family of trannys.

He's out of town until Monday, but you can give him a shout at his shop...

I have a new-in-the-box Fenton shifter for those trannys that I got off
ebay a little while back.  Same exact one I used long ago in a galaxy
far away on my supercharged 59 Hawk.  They come up for sale from time
to time but you have to look closely as ALL the Fentons won't work,
only certain ones and I don't remember the numbers right offhand.

I don't know if this one would work, but here is a shifter for three
spd. T-85 w/side cover. Says it's for F***, but maybe it could be
"adjusted" for Studes.

That looks very, very cool, but I am unsure if it would work with an
overdrive... the solenoid takes up the same real estate that it would be
logical to use for the shifter...

Ted,

I have one of those 3 spd shifters.  Mounting brackets, shift rods, lever
plates.  It says Indy H on it?  I took it off a custom job a while back.

Bo
64daytonaht - 27 Aug 2005 00:37 GMT
I have a 4 spd floor shifter, I believe to be a Hurst, or Indy. It says Indy
H on the chrome part of the shifter.  It has the adjustable mounting
brackets for either T-86, or T-85/89.  Shifting rods and shift lever adaptor
plates.

There was a story about this in July '85 TW. Written by Jim Geary. It wasn't
completely successful. As I recall it worked okay except he burned up a
couple units towing a travel trailer. The adapter came from Lionel Stone.
That was 20 years ago! May not be available any longer.
A.J. - 27 Aug 2005 01:36 GMT
Lional Stone still has the stuff, I was over to his place to pick up some
R-3 heads to work on for him just before Spokane but he said that since the
Tremic 5 speeds were around for $1,500 there wasn't much call for the O.D.
conversion and the big O.D. units are getting scarce.

The only problem with a lot of Stones repo stuff is it doesn't fit.  Anybody
use one of these kits?  How much are they?

Have to call Stone at 1-818-990-8916 to find out the latest price I do so
much work and trading with Stone when I tell someone what I paid the price
in his latest catalogue is different. Sonny Josker has some pictures of the
one I have in my 63  8E5112 Champ.Been using it behind a Avanti 2 327 with
a turbo and have had no problens since 1980. Stop by the Monday or Thurs.
chat and you can learn more.

Mike - 27 Aug 2005 10:48 GMT
With the 4 speed OD kit, there were also special shafts, in addition to
the adaptor that housed reverse.  They may have been remachined B/W parts.
If OD was disengaged, but not locked out; the unit free wheeled.  That
made shifting easier/faster.
