Tri-State Meet... anyone rethinking?

With gas in the area hitting $2.75-$3.00/gallon, is anyone rethinking about
going to Asheville next weekend (or any other meets)?  I'm not trying to put
the hex on the meet, but I live in Lexington, SC (162 miles away) and it's
going to probably cost me at least $75 in gas round trip... I can't imagine
driving across 2-3 states to attend.  This $150 weekend is probably going to
be more like $250... and that's not buying anything.

If I get the Hawk Back we are going uto the NE Zone Meet near  Mass.
According to GPS it is 218 miles eac waay plus an extra 80 plus miles
to see the Asa Hall auction. Our Navigator now cost ober $ 90 to fill
the tank, but the Hawk gets about 23mpg so we ar looking at about $30
each way. If you look at Great Britain they pay $ 6.17 a gallon  and
they are on par with us now with the cars they drive. BMW, Mercedes
etc.
Loy Daniel - 31 Aug 2005 22:35 GMT
Yeah, but you don't have to drive a lot of miles to get across England.

And most of that $6.17 per gal is taxes...

I don't know what's going on... the gas stations around Columbia/Lexington
all decided to go to $2.89-$3.00/gallon and on the way home you'd think they
were giving away gas.  People must be freaking out... nearly every station I
drove past people were stacked 2-3 deep at every pump.  Hopefully things
will get back to reality after Labor Day.  Or we'll be paying $3.50/gallon
by next weekend around here.

Gas may be cheaper than beer but my car won't run on beer and I get a
headache from drinking gas.

This morning, gas down on the corner was $2.45 a gallon.  I got a call
from a friend of mine who drives a Coke truck, and he said that he was
watching them raise the prices to $3.10 a gallon.  My boss came in and
said her husband went inside Meijer, gas was $2.50 per gallon and when
he came out 15 minutes later, it was $3.19.

If I'm looking at this right, we saw nearly a .70 cent per gallon jump
today.  Do you really think it'll drop 70 cents a gallon after Labor
day?  I personally doubt we'll see gas under $3.00 again.

Hope I'm wrong.

They were saying this afternoon that the pipeline(s) that carry 90% of
the gas to NC is out of commission because of the storm, and it's going
to be about 5 days before it's fixed.

THAT is a big problem!

There has been talk about rationing.  May be urban legend, but folks will
react based on what they hear, causing a self-fulfilling prophecy.

If I thought it were true, I would fill up all five cars today, just to have
fuel on hand by using three of the tanks to store fuel.  Since I don't think
it's real (yet) I won't.  But, others will, and that may make me feel like I
have to, which would make it real, because I know they are affecting the
supply, in a very real way.  We are only seeing the early stages of panic.
It starts with those that are "directly" affected, and spreads like the flu
through the rest of the population.

Hope I am wrong!

Wanna bet?

Gordon Richmond - 02 Sep 2005 00:36 GMT
That's a pretty astute analysis, Dave.

I think, given the potential for panic buying leading to totally
unnecessary shortages, that the government should impose gas rationing
right away for say a six week period, with a definite end point. That
might defuse a potential major mess.

Depending on what I drive and what I bring with me to the meet to
sell, I am looking at a fuel bill somewhere between $350 and  $525.  I
am beginning to believe my days as an evil vendor are quite over.
Either that, or USED Studebaker parts are going to have to DOUBLE in
price for it to be affordable for me to attend these meets as a
vendor.  The big enclosed swap meet trailer is for sale out at the
road as I type this.  I used to be happy at Asheville if I sold $1200
in parts at the meet.  With prices being what they are, I'll have to
easily pass the $2k mark for it to be worth while.  I enjoy that meet
a LOT but I know that $2k in sales just plain "ain't gonna happen'
there.

Actually, the same holds true for York and Reedsville.  The distance
to those meets is not far from the distance to Asheville and the
associated running around miles.  If I were to bring the truck and
trailer loaded with parts, a couple nights out for supper and 3 nights
in a motel, I'll easily spend $800 to attend a meet.

Besides the cost is the problem of availablity. There are already
stations in NC that do not have fuel to sell. As Jeff DeWitt said, it
is a problem when 90% of the supply is cut off. The governor called for
a reduction in not essential driving. I guess I'll have to wait and see
how things are next week. Of course if I can get up there I guess I can
always coast back home. The price of regular hit 2.76 today, up 23
cents in two days. Of course that was 2 o'clock this afternoon, no
telling what it is now.

In Southern Indiana (near the Louisville area), gas went from 2.57 on
sunday to 2.59 this morning to 2.79-to-2.99 at some stations later in
the day. In Louisville itself, Some stations are charging up to 3.19 gal
or more. Some station owners/managers on TV say their allocations have
been reduced by their suppliers.

Sorry to say this but anything Sleezly says I need to have verified
three different ways before I believe it.  If on a sunny July day he
said it was hot out I'd have to go outside before I'd believe it.

He used to be the second worse governor in the country, then California
recalled Davis.

Right on!

Having recently returned from the National in Spokane, I can say that
the cost of fuel was peanuts compared to the room and the meals.
Heck, I spent way more on Stude toys than I did on gas!

If a Stude meet is big event in your life, you can find other ways to
cut back on gasoline expenditures.
