I ordered a set of Studebaker V8 main bearings from one of the larger
Stude vendors. They were advertised as Clevite bearings.
When they arrived, the label on the box with the bearing set part
number says "Made in Taiwan". Nowhere on the bearings do they say
Clevite, nor does the box or the label have a manufacturer's name.
A followup call to the vendor just got the response "Yeah, all the
Clevite bearings are made in Taiwan now".
What do you guys think? Am I getting took?
Thanks, Paul

No, you are not...
Clevite was previously a T&N company (British owned)...
Federal-Mogul bought T&N about 7 or 8 years ago (a several billion dollar
deal that involved a whole host of held companies)...
Federal-Mogul got screwed by the Brit's (who knew exactly what they were
doing) because Abex (one of the companies that F/M wanted) had a TON of
asbestos liability claims held against it, but were not disclosed in the due
diligence).....
Federal-Mogul was trying to corner the 'shell bearing' business in the whole
word and our FTC stepped in and said 'No, that would constitute a monopoly
in the USA and told F/M that 'if' the deal were to be approved by the FTC,
then F/M would have to 'sell off' the Clevite portion. F/M found a
convenient host buyer in Dana. Promptly, a lot of the production was off
sourced to cheaper labor countries. Hence the Taiwan connection.
F/M found that the lawyers saw blood and filed so many asbestos lawsuits,
that F/M filed for bankruptcy to limit the liability exposure.
They still have not emerged from bankruptcy to this day...
Your shell bearings are fine.
The Clevite company will stand behind their products.

I wouldn't have thought much of it, but I am not used to seeing
replacement bearings that do not have a manufacturer's name stamped in
them on the back side.
This got me wondering if they were just some cheap subsitute.

I have never seen a name brand rod or main insert that wasn't
identified on the back of the bearing.........having said that I
haven't been on the inside of a STUDE V-8 in over 20yrs.

T&N had a scientist of one type or another who looked into asbestos and
told the firm that it was bad sh.t and they were killing people. They
dumped him and the report, with stern threat involving removal of his
stern should ever make a peep about it.
This all happened before I was born.
Mention T&N to adults Brits and one in ten will mention killer
asbestos.
Due diligence! HAH. The web would have told them all they needed to
know.
(Yes, you hit a sore point with me.)
