Jeff DeWitt - 14 Sep 2005 02:43 GMT Isn't LA the home of freeway shootings? They probably figure the other drivers are armed.
As the late, great Robert A. Heinlein said, "An armed society is a polite society".

I don't know if this is out of kindness, but in both societies, they/we seem to have discovered that you get where you want to go if drivers are like this.
However, if you have the time to waste, are big and have a banged-up car, it's a lot more fun to drive in NYC or Boston!

Lark Parker - 13 Sep 2005 22:07 GMT Pat, here is the complete Teddy Roosevelt quote in case you need it:
"The President is merely the most important among a large number of public servants. He should be supported or opposed exactly to the degree which is warranted by his good conduct or bad conduct, his efficiency or inefficiency in rendering loyal, able, and disinterested service to the Nation as a whole. Therefore it is absolutely necessary that there should be full liberty to tell the truth about his acts, and this means that it is exactly necessary to blame him when he does wrong as to praise him when he does right. Any other attitude in an American citizen is both base and servile. To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public. Nothing but the truth should be spoken about him or any one else. But it is even more important to tell the truth, pleasant or unpleasant, about him than about any one else.""

Lark Parker - 14 Sep 2005 00:05 GMT ><snip> "disinterested service to the Nation as a whole." > >Now, I see. <G> Sure. Just use the part that serves your viewpoint.<GG>
For instance: "We must remember not to judge any public servant by any one act, and especially should we beware of attacking the men who are merely the occasions and not the causes of disaster." Theodore Roosevelt
can be shortened to: "judge any public servant by any one act" Theodore Roosevelt
Here’s a couple more from Teddy Roosevelt that can be used after some selected pruning.
"War is not merely justifiable, but imperative upon honorable men, upon an honorable nation, where peace can only be obtained by the sacrifice of conscientious conviction or of the national welfare." TR
"We live in a great and free country only because our forefathers were willing to wage war rather than accept the peace that spells destruction." TR
