Cloverleaf engine question

Were Cloverleaf engines bare blocks, or were they factory short blocks, or
other?

Evidently Leprechans do not know how to fit piston rings or set crankshaft end
play.

All the above would seem to fit the bill, as I've seen them in the crate
either, or.  Found a complete engine one time, minus intake, water intake,
and fuel pump.

Heavy duty factory engines and replacement short blocks for trucks.
Theres no mention in the car parts book that I can find discussing
"cloverleaf engines."
Factory Installed engines would have a 5E(259) or 6E(289) engine number
plus a cloverleaf. Details are in the truck parts book, on the serial #
page and the engine parts page dealing with blocks, stripped
engines(long blocks I6's only) and short blocks.

Does it say what made them "heavy duty"?

I asked about cloverleaf engines a year or two ago as I have a
never-been-fired cloverleaf short block.  It has the aluminum timing
gear, chrome rings, and (supposedly) heavy duty bearings.  I always
thought they came just as complete engines, but apparently not.

Do you know what would constitute "heavy duty bearings".  Are they
larger (wider) than stock or made from a different matierial?  If a
different material, what would it be?

Dick,

The heavy duty bearings are a different material.  Articles I have read
say they are a heavy duty trimetal composit of aluminum and  copper
lead composition.

As far as I know the cloverleaf engines were checked to be used as R series
engine blocks for uniformity of wall thickness and other blueprint specs but
were used for replacement HD engine blocks if you ordered one. My brother
has one that has other HD parts but I could not tell you if it came that
way.

If I remember correctly, the cloverleaf engines are  replacement service
engines, only and are so identified.

Production line models (in trucks at least 57 on) will have a seial number
such as 5EXXXXX, or 6EXXXXX stamped into the boss.
