I just got back from a weekend long meet and I went on the highway for
the longest ever for this car. 150 miles. parked the car and unloaded
the trunk and what not and then i noticed a puddle of green. the car
ran great and no problems or noises. the water pump has just a hint of
chatter.could even be the belt but,,, I don't think so.
I read the old water pump posts and think that it is time to do mine.
so while i have it off, what else should I do while it is dismantled??
what gaskets to replace, timming gears???? and who has the "good"
water pumps?
I have read that they are not all the same and the tolerances make
alot of differance. I really only want to do this once. any help is
good help. thanks. rich(leaky and love it)la torre

Buy the Heavy duty pump from SASCO or other vendors, all the new
ones are made by the same company. (Assuming a V8, non-Avanti)

There are two companies making V8 waterpumps.
The ones sold by Prim and carried by some of the vendors are just like
the originals and work fine.
Some of the pumps made by Moto have a different shape impeller and do
not pump enough water around because the gap between the impeller and
the housing is too large.I sell the correct heavy duty pumps at $80.00
non Avanti , late 1951-64 V8.
Free shipping for the newsgroup folks.

only items to replace are the WP gasket and the copper washers under
the bolts. Nothing else needs to be disassembled to replace the WP.
If your current one isn't making a death rattle yet you may want to do
a good flush before replacing the WP so you're not running caustic
chemicals by your nice new WP. Also a good time to look at your hoses.

BTW, the SASCO pump comes with the gasket and washers, so I assume the
other do.
