Does the 27 Dana rear have the same propensity toward failure as the 44?
I dropped a 259 in a Lark VI with the 27. Would it be a good idea to find
a 44 or will the 27 do, if I keep my foot off the floor?
Thanks!

Tom,
259 equipped Larks were equipped with a 27 from the factory. Under
normal driving conditions, it is not a dangerous set-up. I feel you
are more likely to break a center section than you are an axle shaft.
BTW, my '62 ragtop had a 27 for the first 132000 miles if its life. I
did have one axle shaft failure in that car about at 120000 and it was
within 24 hours of my purhcasing the car. I have no idea how the
previous owner installed and removed drums so it is hard to say
exactly what caused the failure.

Many Larks equipped with a 259 came factory equipped with the 27. I
have a 1964 Daytona (parts car) with a 259, 3 speed (OD) , that came
with a Dana 27. For non- hot rod useage, it should be O K.

Thanks, guys. My '55 Commander has the 44 but none of the others. I won't
be taking them to the drags anytime soon. <G>
