since im rebuilding my flathead 6 i would like some advice on improving
power and fuel economy.im not looking for a hotrod just a daily driver
that will keep up with traffic. should i mildly relieve the block to
help flow and mill the head to raise the compression ratio back up? and
if i mill the head how much material is safe to remove? is there a way
to measure the head thickness as the shop manual doesnt give any specs.
would porting and polishing help or would it hurt my objective? a
pertronix conversion is planned already. what would be a good choice
for a carb? i was thinking along the lines of a two barrel with a small
primary. is there anything else i should be looking at?
thanks in advance

Homer - I bought a neat conversion plate from our own OldCarFart, Calvin
Lowell and it holds a Mot*craft two-barrel that wasn't a big deal to
install, starts quickly and gives the ol' 185 a little more pep. I
recommend it!
You might want to contact Bill Cathcart in Plainfield, CT, as he's the
flathead 6 expert and has accessories galore for them. I believe he has a
website too.

You can get hold of Bill Cathcart at www.cathcartsstudebaker.com. He has
dual intake and exhaust manifolds, big valves, 3/4 cams, etc. for the Champ
6. He'll build the whole engine for you, if you want.
You can also put on a '60 Lark head to get the compression ratio up to 8:1.
There are still NOS ones at SASCO, cheap. Some of those heads need just a
skim cut (.005-.010) to be sure they are flat, so you may wind up at
8.2-8.5:1.

I'd consider a 5-speed conversion. 'Really ups the driveability and fun
factor.
