Well, I found a 62 Champ long bed 3/4 ton pickup with a 259" and the
standard granny+3more tranny. Wondering if anyone can comment on the
driveability of this combo when something like a 3.73:1 rear gearing is
substituted in for what I suspect is something like a 4.56 or higher.
Thanks
Greg

I had a 3/4 ton pickup that was geared nice from the factory. Like you,
I thought it might have been a "stump pulling" gear. I was pleasantly
fooled. Check it first.

My 64 has the 289/T-98 (truck 4 spd) and 4.11 rear gears.
Runs 70-75 @ about 3200-3300 rpm .

You need to extend the fan on the front side so that it can act as a
propellor and help pull that baby!

It's possible to go too far on the rear-end gear. I have a 1984 F**d
half-ton with a 300 six, 3+overdrive, and a "station wagon" rear end
(3.08?). It's swee-eet like a farm pickup in the first two gears, but
struggles up to 60 in third and often can't hold 65 in OD. 3.73 seems
right, but it's going to call for some serious torque for highway cruise.
Stop me if you've heard this one before STOP.
