Guestion is I have a 1951 Land Cruiser that was registered with the
following number -  G 812835261 This does not seem to be the same as
the VIN number that is 8I 3389. Any one have any idea which is the VIN.
I thought I had heard of some states that used the engine number in the
early 50's.

The cars validity is being questioned by a local DMV by the person I
sold it to.

Thanks in advance.

What is interesting here is I was the second owner of this car and I
turned in all the original dealer title paperwork to the NYS DMV.

Thanks

Can you check this number - 8133889
claudeski@netzero.com - 20 Sep 2005 15:38 GMT
Not until tonight when I get home. Maybe someone else can check. Where
are you getting all these numbers from?

Previously you said 8I 3389, now you got 8133889.

The 8 "I" 3389 is supposedly what is on the post plate in the front
door. This number is G 812835261 supposedly what was on the
registration I gave the fellow with the car. This is the number 8133889
that I wrote on the bill of sale. When ever you can.

Thanks in advance.

Bill,

8133889 is consistant with vin # range for 51 commander,
8,110,001-8,217,000, built in South Bend.

Engine # V-101 - V-123000

The G # has to many numbers in it to make any sense out of it.  The G# would
indicate Champion, though.  South Bend
G-1,000,001 - G-1,115,500.  LA G-889,101 - G-907,300

Bill,
The only number I can make sense out of is the 8,133,889.  This crosses
to a South Bend production 1951 Commander and would be right for your
1951 Land Cruiser.

The leading "G" in the number the car is registered with signifies a
Champion, and would not be right for your Land Cruiser.  Furthermore,
the serial number G 812,835,261 is not even close to the 6 and 7 diget
Champion serial numbers and/or engine numbers used in 1951.

1951 Commander serial  numbers all started with an "8", but they all
had 7 digets.  The serial number 813,389 does not cross to any 1951
Studebaker.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Dick. More questions this seven digit number would be on the
pillar on the drivers side? Would they have used an "I" instead of a
"1"?

I think I am going to start making copies of everything that goes
through my hands.

Thanks in advance.

Yes the "I" represents a 1. This was to avoid confusion with 7.

...which then, of course, created confusion with "I"  <g>
