I'm getting ready to "upgrade the brakes on my 64 Wagonair.. The car was
origionally a 6cyl with manual trans..
The person who I purchased the car from replaced the dead 6cyl with a 259v/8
& 3spd o/d trans from a 64 Cruiser..
I've already ordered the Turner brake brackets to install disc brakes up
front..
Question is, should I replace the smaller 6cyl rear brakes system with v/8
stuff? Or should I leave it alone?
I do have a rear-end assy from a 63 Lark that I parted out some years back..
It was a v/8 with an auto trans..

I would try leaving the rear brake setup alone since the heavy work will
be done with the front disks. Regarding the rear end, a 44 is always
preferred over the 24 or 23...

Better check that engine. '64 Cruisers came only with 289s.

Those brakes should be fine, but ask JT if you need to cut pressure to
them (I suspect you might)

I'm probably not the one to ask as I'm just speculating..

Sorry, I was thinking of Jim Turner who likely has an opinion...

For slow flatland driving, I guess the "6" brakes could do if you're
not towing.
Otherwise, I'd go for the axle/brake change.
When you're done, drive easy and get the brakes worn in, then try an
emergency stop on a wide space. If the rearend comes around on you, go
for a rear pressure reduction or maybe harder shoes might do the trick
and will last longer.
Havig a reear come around is not fun, if it is unexpected.
If uou have in mind using your parking brake in case of front brake
failure, keep0 the release on or you might come around!
I had to teach the instructor that in my :"naughty boy" remedial
driving course. He hadn't tried it.

If it were my car I would upgrade the rear brakes to the V-8 brakes,
upgrading the rear wheel cylinders would eliminate any pressure issues.

Joe,
I was assuming that they were on the new axle he was putting in.
Good of you to mention that in case palns change.

Also, you might want to check the rear axle ratio's considering you now have
O/D.

Thanks for all the replies..
Seeing that the wagon is a manual trans with o/d and the 63 Lark rear was
behind an v/8 auto trans, I was thinking just using the backing plates with
new shoes & hardware.. Also was going to replace the wheel cylinders and
rear brake hose as well..
