I feel like I've gotten my 64 R-1 out of a long extended hibernation.
It's been a whole year since I've driven it more than a few blocks. It
is running fantastic - except for the brakes - they're scary! Please
help me understand what is wrong with them.
At speed, the brakes will slow the car pretty well, not great, but
acceptable. However, if I needed to come to a complete stop, I can
apply the brakes with great force but I can't get them to lock up or
even stop the car very quickly. This is most noticable coming to a
stop in traffic at a light. If the choke is on, it's almost impossible
to keep the car from rolling.
I've installed a dual master cylinder and a proportioning valve. I can
tell a small difference when adjusting the pressure to the rear brakes,
but almost insignificant stopping power. Brake pressure is not spongy.
System has been bled (and MC was bench bled). Any ideas?
Thanks for your help,
Rich

I'd be concerned that you have no braking in the front. I'd check
for stuck pistons in the front calipers, check the rears while you are
there. I guess it could be the booster too. I wish I could be more
specific, but you should check everything anyway.

Rich,
Check your brake pads in front. Studebaker disc brakes are somewhat
unique in that the metal backing plates of the pads will hit a stop
long before the lining material is worn down to nothing. If you look
at pads so worn, they appear to be acceptable if you are used to
judging lining thickness on Brand X cars. The symptom is a hard pedal
and progressively weaker braking.

Going through a hedge onto someone's lawn was my way of stopping when
the brake pads still showed friction makerial, Gord
Or maybe that was when resting the battery on top of the booster too
many time split the tube gommet at the back of the booster.

Sounds a lot like my R1 when the brake booster failed. Good, hard
pedal but virtually no stopping power.
Also, as Gord stated, take a look at the front pads. If it still has
the Stude disc brakes, there should be a line cut on the side of the
pad. When you reach the end of that line, it is time for new pads.

Thanks for the suggestions. Guess I'll park the car until I have time
to really investigate well - power booster, front pads, etc. Would
hate to have put all this time, effort and money into the car just to
cause an accident.

I second that - the brake booster went out on my R2 and had the same
symptoms. Swapped it out and everything worked.

"The President is merely the most important among a large number of public
servants. He should be supported or opposed exactly to the degree which is
warranted by his good conduct or bad conduct, his efficiency or
inefficiency in
rendering loyal, able, and disinterested service to the Nation as a whole.
Therefore it is absolutely necessary that there should be full liberty
to tell
the truth about his acts, and this means that it is exactly necessary to
blame
him when he does wrong as to praise him when he does right. Any other
attitude
in an American citizen is both base and servile. To announce that there
must be
no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President,
right
or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally
treasonable to the
American public. Nothing but the truth should be spoken about him or any one
else. But it is even more important to tell the truth, pleasant or
unpleasant,
about him than about any one else."
