I put a new motor in the 1963 Avanti passenger side power window this
evening and the window works but sometimes it does not respond to the
up and down switch. Then I just the noticed the drivers side power
window which worked just fine is acting up. When they do go up or down
they are great, but other times are not responsive at all. I am
wondering if I have a ground short and if so where to look?

Did you reconnect the wires at the relay

Yes Bill. I did not disconnect them when I put the new motor in. You
are referring to the relay behind the battery right?

The only relay just provides power with the key on, so that is not the
problem. The problem is dirty switch contacts or a bad connection. The
switches handle a lot of current and often fail.

A running change that Studebaker made in Avantis was to install a shield for
the power window wiring where they run from the door to the body. The
reason for this was the wires tend to flex until they break WITHIN the
wiring harness as the door opens and closes. This can drive you crazy as
they can be intermittent depending on how the wire(s) come together when the
door is closed. I ran into to this on an early '64- new motor, no "up". I
finally opened the harness at the doors and found the frayed wires.
