I'm an SDC member, longtime lurker, rare contributor, and
I'm wondering what you guys think is undervalued nowadays
in the Stude market. (I know, "all of 'em!" or "mine!")

I've noticed the Hawks, bulletnose Commanders, Speedsters,
etc. have gone up quite a bit in the past couple years for good
clean examples. The number of ads for good clean cars in Turning
Wheels seems to be going down, with more flocks and needs a
little (more like a sh*tload of) work, so I'm wondering what you
guys think is the current steal of Studes.

Late 40's pickups?

Early 50's pickups?

Neither since the last TW showcased them both?

Cruisers? Larks? Anything with a six?

Let's hear it!

The more doors and the fewer cylinders a car has will reduce its value,
all other factors being equal. (I.E, a 4-door six will usually be the
cheapest car you can buy.)

Value-wise, I always thought a nice 1965 Cruiser Six would be a good
compromise car. Enough power to get out of its own way, but with the
nice, nice Cruiser interior.

A couple years ago, I wanted an automatic-trans  Stude to drive to
meets and tours, being tired of shifting a four-speed. I bought a
usable 1964 Daytona 4-door with 180 HP 259 (although it has duals on
it) and Flightomatic. It's a car I really enjoy. 'Never the flashiest
car at the meet, but it's comfortable and useful and didn't set me back
an arm and a leg. BP

I would have to agree with BP. The highest level trimmed 4 door Daytona
would be the way to go. Get a 289 4 barrel carb Automatic with AC and if
it warrants the work, do some engine mods to boost the HP. Maybe do the
Avanti mods on the engine with a nice free flowing, but quiet exhaust and
that would be a fabulous sleeper to blow past most modern cars on the
highway and still drive a cool Stude. I don't know if it will ever make
the top ten list of Stude collectibles, but they are the most refined of
the Studes as well. I still have one of those on my wish list.

When I see what rust free four door Larks go for on E-Bay in the rust free
states I wonder if a guy could make any money on shipping a whole truck load
back here to the East coast rust belt.
Its just the shipping that kills them, especially flat head six four doors.
See some nice examples go for 1200 -1500 dollars, how can you beat that ?.

If I could do it and make a buck I would, but fuel costs make it
impossible. Last year, La. area to Md was $900, now $1300 and that's
with a decent discount over the regular rate. Decent 4 doors needing no,
or little work are in the 3K range, and that means a $4500 break even
deal brought out east for resale.  I missed this little HT by a day, I
think it would have been worth the shipping.

Funny you'd mention a 1965 Cruiser six, that's exactly what I'm driving.  It
IS a really nice, comfy car and the little McKinnon six has plenty of scoot.

Matt,
I am surprised that you would have time for a studebaker, I mean
you are the Nascar crew chief for Ryan Neuman from South Bend Indianna
correct ? Good luck to you guys at Talladega this weekend. Are there any
other Ryan Neuman fans out there on the newsgroup ? I like this kid. He
drives clean, he is quiet and has an engineering degree. He
communicates well with his crew, and can speak their language. I realise
you aren't the other Matt Borland. I just could resist giving the kid
from South Bend a plug.
If you are Ryan's crew chief get some used Nascar Chevy parts
laying around the pits and replace the Mckinnon Chevy 283 with some new
technology . It will bolt into a 65-66 Chevy Baker V-8 equipped car.

Heh, no I'm the _other_ Matt Borland...

I never thought somebody with that name would get famous... At least
it's for being a Nascar crew chief... Funny, he and I are close to the
same age and he looks twice as old. I must be doing something right. :-)

Of course, how could I not root for Ryan Newman? I mean, Ryan's crew
chief has to be brilliant with a cool name like that!

...and yes, I think maybe we need to talk Cathcart, Harbit, and Stone into
fielding an entry. Maybe we could homologate a '61 Hawk body...

I'll be the listed crew chief just to throw everyone off. It's genius!
