Well teranews finally went down for the last time in my neck of the
woods. A company rep. wrote me back saying the free service servers
were dead but I could upgrade a fee server if I would like. No thanks.
I'm using google groups for this post but really don't like thier
format, not to mention the delay in getting current posts.
Anyone know wherre I can sign up for a reliable, free newsgroup
service?
Thanks
Jim

It's not free but Usenet.com seems to do a very good job for $4.95 a
month. I don't know if you can post pictures with it but you can see
them just fine, it's also fast and keeps messages for months.

Earthlink.net's news servers are pretty reliable, and free sorta if
you're an earthlink.net subscriber.

Jim,
With comcast you should have access to Giganews as part of your
internet service package. It does not allow pix but the news feed is
very reliable and 92,000+ newsgroups to view.
Call you comcast account rep and find out how to set it up

I use high speed net from the local phone company and had used Outlook
express for my newsgroups...It was in the deal...But...I don't like
how they set and work so I downloaded a free copy of FreeAgent ...I
picked the groups I wanted and it works great...I don't get adware and
other crap added on my system here...well so far...I was thinking of
buying the better one you pay for with more features but this one
works so well I never did...You can find it on www.download.com

I have been using Agent for right at 10 years now. Actually, I am
still using Agent 99f (the 1995 version) and it has never failed me.
I would strongly recommend it to anyone looking for a new reader.

I got a free copy of News Rover from Usenet.com it's pretty cool, much
more flexible than the newsreader in Thunderbird or Agent (and I really
don't like Outlook Express).

But Agent and Outlook are just readers. He's looking for a newsgroup server
to use that reader with.

http://www.talkaboutautos.com/group/alt.autos works good for me. No pics,
but free, and fast postings.

Hi Jim,
I had used Teranews awhile ago, and was sorry to hear that they dropped their
free service. Other than a few unreliable sources, there aren't many free
servers on the Internet these days worth accessing.
Not a free option, but you may want to check out Newsguy.com if you get a
chance. I picked up an account with them about a year ago, and pay about $3
month for newsgroup access. You also get 2 email boxes (something@newsguy.com)
that I don't use, but may be of use to some.
They offered a 2 or 3 day test account when I joined, and if they still offer
it, they may be worth a peek.

how do you like it? It looks promising from their web site. It's now
$5.95 a month but that's not all that bad really. Only thing is
there's a 3GB cap, not sure if I would ever reach that or not though.

OK, for those of us who really don't care how it works, as long as it
works...
why do you need a newsgroup service? Don't all ISPs provide
newsgroups? I've had newsgroups through all the ISPs I ever had...some
were better than others, but they all had alt.autos.studebaker, and
most allowed pictures.
So why do some want/need something different?

I haven't had much luck with Comcast... I'm sharing a connection with
the other people that I live with, and apparently only the primary
account holder has NG access. And I don't think you can access it from
another connection (something nice about something like the old
Teranews - I could access it from, say, a laptop in a hotel lobby.)

Hey N8,
With Comcast, all the computers in the house (4 of them) can access
the NG's thru Giganews (both on my e-mail address and Debbie's). The
only place I have problem is in a hotel room when I am connected thru
another network.
