My daily driver (well, when it's not in the body shop) is a Porsche
944...  which has really crappy dash lighting.  Since it's in the body
shop right now being worked on, I have been ordering a few parts for it
so I can fix a few outstanding issues with it once it gets back so I
can have a legitimately nice car for once.  One of the things that's
always bothered me about it is the poor dash lighting.  It uses
194-format bulbs for the dash lights; I found a source for some
replacements for 194s that use five LEDs instead of an incandescent
filament.  They also come in red :)  This might be useful to owners of
R-series cars that actually like to drive their cars at night as they
also have the same bulbs available with a BA9s base (would replace a 55
or 57 bulb) so I'll let you know how it works out.  They also have UV
LEDs which might be cool for people with old black-light dashes.

The issue with simply using higher wattage bulbs in a Porsche dash is
it's all plastic; say a 5W bulb would work well for a while but would
start melting stuff... :/

Nate,
For the 6 volt cars, I am now had 9 different samples of LEDs made up. So
far I am not happy with any of them. The problem is even with wide angle
LEDs they just don't go around the corners. Of course that is only in old
Studebaker dashes. Perhaps in your Porsche, the light doesn't have to go
around blind spots.

The bulbs I got have one LED pointing straight out and four pointing in
various directions to the side.  Unfortunately I don't have the car to
try them :(

The problem with the Porsche is it relies on little plastic "light
guides" to move the light from the bulbs to the gauge faces, and the
reflective stuff on the outside is for crap after 20 years...  I tried
stripping it off and applying white paint instead, it helped a little
but what they really need is simply more light.  I am anxious to see if
these work...  (I'm anxious to get the car back too, I'm going through
stickshift withdrawal and it ain't pretty.  I think my landlady caught
me watching the speed channel and making motor noises while driving an
"air car" on the couch <G>)

There's a guy that used to make a little custom made LED thing that
actually replaced the light guides, but a) he's in England and b) he's
not making them anymore apparently... :/
