Got a chance today to look at the mystery motor in the CE.  No indian
head, no names I can see.  Only the large "P" on the head.  The serial
number pad is on the left front of the block, and the numbers are
fairly large and well stamped, beginning with a "T".  Rear dump exhaust
manifold and the carb is no help as it has an adapter and a two barrel
Bendix/Stromberg variation the likes of which I haven't seen in years.
A copy (sort of) of an old 94/97.  The tranny is a top shifter with a
plate (not cast) type top and eight bolts.  They hacked up the floor to
get the shifter to clear but it looks like all this mess was never
finished or even fired up.  No fuel pump, an empty hole in the block
that at first glance looks like a rod exit hole; two bolt and flush
with the block and a weird bolt pattern.  Anyone got any ideas?

I have seen Plymouth flat head 6's w/ a "P" on the head. My CE came w/o any
engine or trans at all, but I found a deal on the entire running gear from a
'39 Commander on ebay last year dirt cheap. The seller stated that it must
be picked up in Cincinnati, so most buyers stayed away from it. I grabbed
between Spring Carlisle & SB last year. Price was $144.00 total, & the owner
helped load it up while a local cop visited with us & talked cars. He had
noticed the 2 Studes on the trailer, & had to get a look.
I already had a 245, though, which will probably go in the truck, coupled to
a T5.

Barry, this car is missing things like vent window assemblies, side
panels under the hood, door panels, and most of the dash.  Have you got
any of these?  Anyone else?

A 1937 Packard six is a possibility. Looking through some older
material for that "T" prefix, I see Packard used a T that year only.
Numbers start at 1500 or 1526 depending on which source you choose to
believe.

 There's a '37 Packard Six in a brochure at http://www.oldcarmanual.com/ .
It is shown with a center exhaust outlet, for what it is worth.  They have
other brochures.  It might be worth looking at "possibles" for similarities.
Some of the engine pictures are pretty good.

The Packard 6 engine I have has "Packard" in raised letters on the head. I
considered usiing it for my CE, but is is a little longer than the Stude big
6 engine. As I recall, the Packard jr. series came out in '35, with 115C 6's
& 120 models w/ 282 8's.
The Packard 6 is same engine as used in some White trucks of the era, I have
been told.

I have an extra dash, but clear plastic is shot on speedo. I may have an
extra vent window from a sedan if it is same, and maybe side panels.

My next door neigbor is a "know it all", there are times you want to
get up on a ladder and shoot him in the balls. Everytime he sees a
Studebaker Flathead, I hear the same line............ " ah, an old
International", and then he goes off on the international line of
engines. The other day I got that collectible automobile magazine and
they had an article on an Erskine delivery truck,  In it was an
International engine, There are a number of cosmetic differences, but
if you did not  have a Stude engine next to it to compare you could
call it a Studebaker, Packard or International.

An Erskine with an IHC engine.  Now, that's a new one?

Perhaps this guy spoke closer to the truth than you think....The 27 to 29 Erskines used  "Continental" 8f/9f engines. Continental  produced engines for a number of independent makes, including many commercial vehicles. Not sure if they made engines for International but it's possible.

Continental engines were used in at least some of the Kaisers if not
all. Some of these engines were equipped with the Mc Cullough
supercharger. jimmijim   jimmijim8@yahoo.com
