I have a customer w/ a Silver Hawk 6, who wishes to install power steering
due to his arthritis making it difficult for him to steer.
I have a p/s complete set-up on one of my GT Hawk parts cars which I plan to
adapt, but am afraid that the reservoir on the pump will be too big.
Dennis tells me that p/s was not offered on flathead 6 equipped cars, so I
am either going to have to try to use the OHV 6 p/s pump bracket, or
fabricate one. He has the p/s water pump & crank pulleys for a OHV, which
may or may not work on this application.
Any ideas or parts available for this project?
Thank in advance!

I dont have one but I think the OHV6 PS bracket bolted at least at one
point to the threaded holes in the front end of the OHV head.
I would guess you'll have to due a bit of fabricating. Do you have any
Chevybaker PS pumps?? They might fit a bit better .

Is the arm with the control valve from the GT Hawk going to fit the
early steering box ?

I have always assumed that you had to use a p/s steering box to use p/s, so
I had plaanned on using the GT Hawk p/s box.
Anybody got a pump w/ small reservoir?

Do you have a 1956 Service Manual? In the steering section it clearly
shows a bracket that goes over a flathead 6 and the PS mount. It uses
thhe same PS unit as the 56 Hawks. I was hoping to find that bracket
somewhere and use it on my 47 convertible. If you cannot find picture
I will post

I would be looking at 58-60 parts, actually... if he is using a GT Hawk
PS setup he probably has a Bendix style pump, not the earlier Saginaw.

Dennis must not be counting the two 1955 Champion six cylinder "C" cars that
were factory equipped with power steering. John Brooks of Weatherford TX has
one of them. You might check with him and find out how it was done by
Studebaker.

p.s. - Do you plan to go to S.B. and pick up any parts in the near future,
Barry?

If flathead equipped cars were not available with PS whywas there a bracket
made just for this purpose?
