I just inherited/got for Christmas a '51 (?) Champion pickup. The
previous owner (my uncle) had just been finishing up an engine rebuild
and a 12v conversion, and a few other tweaks when he fell ill.
Consequently, the pickup has been sitting in a garage in Scottsdale for
the past four years, about 90% finished.
I am a "weekend mechanic" of sorts, but almost all my experience is with
tractors and farm equipment. While I suppose I COULD finish the work
myself, I don't really have the time, and as slow as I'd be, I'd rather
just pay somebody else to do it for me. Therefore, I would like to find
a mechanic in the Phoenix area to get the truck drivable so I can work
on the rest of the little details at my leisure.
Currently the truck runs. Kinda. The engine was rebuilt, installed, and
that's it; it was never tuned. From what I can tell, all it really needs
is post-rebuild tuning; timing adjusted, carb adjusted, etc. The valves
are also pretty noisy; I assume they need some adjustment as well. The
wiring is a mess, too; it looks like it was just thrown together
temporarily to get the truck running (but this is something I can take
care of myself).
I was hoping I might get some recommendations here on where to take my
new truck to get it running smoothly; I like it a lot, and I am
seriously considering using it as a daily driver (given that I don't
usually travel that far from home, I'm not THAT concerned about
reliability).
Thanks very much.

That truck will probably be more reliable than any of the iron on the
road today.

Does Mr. Collins have a shop I should contact him at? I checked several
phone directories, and there's a lot of guys in the valley with that
name. :)

I probably should have mentioned that I'm looking to get this work done
ASAP; I don't live in the Phoenix area; I'm just visiting for the
holidays. As soon as the truck is drivable, I'm hauling it back home to
Washington state.
Thanks.

IF you don't need the truck ready yesterday, e-mail me and we'll
discuss how I might be able to help you. Work is stacking up and I'm a
few weeks out on taking on any new work.
