A heartfelt apology (OT, political)

February 22, 2006
By Nancy Greggs

As I watched Harry Whittington speak last week, I was struck by his
heartfelt apology to Dick Cheney and the Cheney family for the trouble
he had caused by so thoughtlessly being severely injured. You see, I was
raised in a time, apparently now long gone, when victims were on the
receiving end of an apology - especially in those rare instances when
they had been on the receiving end of a face full of birdshot.

It made me realize how outdated my upbringing has become, and how
discourteous I and my fellow Americans have been in the last few years,
in light of the new polit-etiquette that is obviously now the norm in
our beloved nation.

That being said, may I offer the following apologies to our Dear Leaders
on behalf of myself and my countrymen:

We, the People, humbly apologize for your having to spy on us. Were we
not such an unruly mob, clinging to outdated notions like freedom and
democracy, this course of action, albeit illegal, would never have been
necessary. One can only imagine the vast expense we have put you to in
your efforts to keep America safe, one warrantless wiretap at a time. In
future, I would urge every citizen to whisper a humble mea culpa at
least once in each phone conversation, each letter, each email, just to
let those listening in know we have finally seen the error of our ways.

We, the parents who have had children killed or wounded in Iraq, beg
forgiveness for their foolish inability to avoid meandering into the
line of fire, and our own infantile whining about the lack of body
armour necessary to keep them safe as they fight for this Noble Cause.
We also sincerely apologize for continuing to ask exactly what that
Noble Cause might be, and why the justifications for its pursuit
constantly change. Most importantly, we are sorry for the financial
burden we have placed on all of you by way of medical treatment for our
erstwhile offspring, as well as the cost of shipping their remains back
to us for burial.

We, the victims of Katrina, who have lost our homes, our jobs, and our
family members, humbly beg your pardon for expecting aid when we needed
it most. In the aftermath, we realize how selfish we were to ask for
assistance at a time when those in charge had other priorities to
consider. We are truly sorry that we interrupted dinner arrangements,
shopping sprees, Broadway show attendances and vacation plans. As for
the dollar value of those FEMA trailers that have been left to rust in
Arkansas, if we are ever fortunate enough to have a home address again,
I think it's only fair that you mail us the bill.

We, the workers, who have had our jobs outsourced, are sorry to have
complained so bitterly. In our selfishness, we have failed to consider
that the CEOs and shareholders of major corporations have a right to
enjoy windfall profits, and should not be expected to reward the hard
work of the employees who made them profitable in the first place.

Those of us still lucky enough to be part of the dwindling American
workforce should gratefully accept our unfair share of the tax burden,
instead of constantly harping on the fact that our tax dollars end up in
the pockets of the already wealthy, and instead of pointing the finger
at Big Oil and Big Business, who have somehow earned the right to not
pay any taxes at all. We are collectively ashamed of ourselves in this
regard.

We, the citizenry, who have expected ethical behaviour on the part of
our elected representatives, apologize for demanding investigations into
bribe-taking, and the occasional mis-use of public funds. We now
understand that times are tough for everyone, and a little
cash-on-the-side is sometimes necessary for our trusted officials to
make ends meet.

We, the sick, who have lost our health care coverage, and the elderly
who have lost our access to prescription drugs, ask forgiveness for our
self-centered concerns. We beg the pardon of Big Pharma for endlessly
complaining about their well-deserved exorbitant profits. We can only
imagine the hell we've put their families through. How many times have
we cast an unpleasant pall on their European vacations, their birthday
celebrations on private yachts, the housewarming parties at their newest
mansion, with our constant carping about needing life-saving medical
treatment? Honestly, I don't know what we were thinking.

We, the voters, who have expressed outrage over our elections being
manipulated, beg forgiveness from companies like Diebold, who have
worked tirelessly to ensure that the right people wind up in office,
whether we had the foresight to vote for them or not.

We, the masses, who have held on too long to outmoded ideals like
freedom of speech, who have clung too tightly to the concepts set out in
the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, apologize for our stubbornness
and inability to acclimate ourselves to a country finally emancipated
from such foolishness.

We, the citizens, who have protested the circumventing of our own
statutes as well as international treaties, contritely beg the
forgiveness of those who have so wisely dismissed the quaint, outdated
tradition of the rule of law.

We, the bleeding-hearts, who have demonstrated against those in power
for torturing our fellow human beings in our country's name, beg your
pardon for our misguided belief in such old fashioned ideas as justice
and the humane treatment of others, and apologize for our failure to
accept without question the wisdom of those good Christians whom God has
apparently placed above such petty concerns.

And lastly, we the People humbly beg the pardon of the President and
this Administration for questioning their inalienable right to
jeopardize national security by revealing the identity of covert
operatives for political purposes, to enrich their friends and
themselves by way of no-bid contracts to corporations in which they hold
shares, to lie to us, steal from us, mislead us into war, and to tell us
all to go to hell if we don't like it. That's the kind of leadership we
should praise, not berate.

We hope you will accept our abject apology for all of the above. Our
behaviour has been childish and inexcusable. It's enough to make Mrs.
Alito cry.

I find it hard to believe that anyone would want to kill GW Bush at
this time.

It must be something personal - from long ago.

don't necessarily want to be on.

I don't know why, Lee.
Those in charge of checking me out are liable to have come to the same
conclusion as I have.

I'm against assination as a way of doing things and where the
replacement is much of the same mindset, there could be no political
motive.
Should the VP die, there might  be a cause to worry. (This follows the
old Nixon / Agnew theory,)

(I'm against the death penality as too many guilty ones stay / get free
because of it.)

Give a lot of though to what I've said and you may find that you agree
with me.

(But don't say it or "they" will be after you, if they aren't already.)

No idea what that's in response to - things are lovely since I
configured the new 'puter, updating the killfile.
Sounds like others need to do the same - as I recall, I'm careful to
label OT. I figure that when something is labeled as hot, anyone who
picks it up is kind of an a-hole.

Gee, Pat. Even I think you were trolling in this instance.

This brouhaha had about died a natural death, and you had to go poking
the ashes.

If you really thought that column was funny/whatever, why not simply
post a link to it, under the header "funny column about Cheney, OT"

Then those who might be inclined to find humour in such a situation
could get their jollies, and the rest of us would be spared the
experience. I tend to open all the posts in the NG, but I rarely
follow links, unless they are of real interest to me.

Maybe you should have posted that in alt.humor.lame <G>

Probably because it wasn't about Cheney, and it wasn't humorous. It was
a concise litany of the abuses BushCo has heaped on the heads of Americans.
I sure wasn't laughing when I read it, and can't comprehend anyone who was.

Let me reiterate: it was clearly labeled OT - Political. Anybody who's
been here a while knows my views - why would anyone complain about what
was in that post, unless the subject matter was irrefutable and pointed
out the obvious about anyone who continues to support the criminals in
the administration? Come to think of it, there has not been one comment
about it's content, no denials of any of the stated truths. I find that
kinda telling, don't you?

You know that they're still working on "whisper mode" like in Blue Thunder,
but it's not quite there yet.  They figure it'll have to be a whole main and
tail rotor blade redesign... the blade tip speeds will have to be slowed
down to subsonic.  Just thought I'd throw that in for the paranoid... one
day not only will you not see them, you may not hear them as they're
hovering over your house.

Then why the F**K post it here, then?

That's trolling, just as much as the "other" side does from time to
time.

If I want a fix of political ranting, I know where to look for it.

Let's all try to stick to topics germane to the newsgroup.

Please.

Main Entry: ger·mane
Function: adjective
Etymology: Middle English germain, literally, having the same parents,
from Middle French
1 obsolete : closely akin
2 : being at once relevant and appropriate : FITTING <omit details that
are not germane to the discussion>
synonym see RELEVANT
- ger·mane·ly adverb

Maybe I'd feel a little better about it if the 'other side' got slammed
even once. Not the way it works, though - OT stuff is fine as ling as
it's approved by Fox.
Fine, I'll take a break - now back to the regularly scheduled Clinton
bashing.

I think that itall stems from the BS coming out of Washington.
For example. let's take a look at the group that is one our side.
Iraquis (including Kurds), who ave lost countless fighters as well as
innocent victims, the US forces that have lost 2500 fighters, Brits,
who hit 100 yjis month, and a few others who have lost ten or s
That Washington can imply that this is a multi-member team and expeect
to believe it is linacy.

Had we offered the original builders of the infrastucture (France and
Germany) a "piece of the action in rebuilding Iraq, they probably would
have taken care of it and guarded their own forces. Instead, it looked
like a chance to spread $$$ to FoW contractors.
With that image, they must have let us dig our own grave.

Now that we are several feet along to doing so, many of us have,
reluctantly, come to the conclusion that I did long ago - let's get in
there and act like we mean to win. (You may recall my messages
referring to the USMC O5 USNI article regarding por gain defeat in
'Nam.)

I, basically, have no faith in the folks running this nation. I think
that I would rather have former US Rep "Duke" Cunningham running the
show, now that he has learned his lesson. He won't be available,
though. he will probably start his 5 - 7 years at the end of the month.
At least he knew what e was doing.

Off my soapbox. Karl

All those with full faith in the present administration can now state
so.
(I'll be warming up the printer.)
Barry - 24 Feb 2006 04:48 GMT
No takers - from either side of the aisle. Bush & his gaggle of neo-con
crooks have been as much of a disappointment to patriots as they have been
to liberals.
Prior to Bush's election, I predicted that after 4, or heaven forbid, 8
years in office, the biggest difference we would be able to see between him
& Clinton would be that he(Bush) kept his zipper up in public.
Frankly, America was better off with the administration & Congress
controlled by different parties.

Pat's clown sh.t gets deeper and deeper, I guess he's going full time in the
Red Bullshit business.  I'd be surprised to hear Pat's left leg wasn't
shorter than his right the way everything is slanted left in his world.

Of course, in Pat's mind altered world Dick Cheney never apologized, never
took responsibility for the accident and Cheney actually called Harry a
pussy and to get up and walk it off.

Pat's agenda is no secret, but GW sure gives his detractors a lot of ammo.
Re: N.O.:Pat &friends on the left coast seem to have forgotten JFK's words
as they think that the govt. exists to solve their problems. "Ask not what
your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country" is not
very popular with Democrats now-days. They are too busy demanding new
services & special privileges from a nanny-state govt. at their neighbors'
expanse.
