Try this again..............
I have a customer with a 289 pwrd 54 coupe. 4sp 3:31. He'd like to
possibly install a performance cam. I'm assuming stock compression,
motor is around a 61 model.
Stude alumin intake, 600cfm edelbrock, stock exhaust manifold.
My question is what are the options for the cam. R/1R2 reground. New??
How a bout the John Erb regrind, anyone have experince on this one??
Thanks for the help.

I'm told that the one that Ted Harbit was selling was basically a
reground cam to R1/R2 spec but with a slightly different lobe
separation angle and that it works really well in both an R-motor and a
stock 289. I am ashamed to admit that I've had one for about a year
but have not installed it yet.

Russ,
I have been running one of Ted's R 1 / R 2 cams for about 70,000 miles
in my G T
Hawk. It's a 5 speed with 8.6 : 1 compression , Carter 625 CFM, and
3.31 rear.
What do you need to know? It's a good set up as far as I am concerned.
Low end torque seems only slightly affected and there's a good RPM
range - makes good power.
Idle quality is almost unaffected. I have another of Ted's cams ready
to go into another
project. This one has slightly more lift than the previous one and I
think it's his latest
offering. Haven't run this one yet.

I guess my question is how the motor is affected, and if the cam and
carb alone without any further mods ie compression ratio will it make
it a dog. A hot rod idle would be a good thing up to a point.
Has anyone ran the John Erb cam?? If someone has John's phone # email
or post it for me
Thanks

Just for general information.
Depending on how much is willing to be spent, but a good three angle
valve grind with some proper port massaging goes a long way for both
performance and milage, in addition to the cam swap.
