ISTR someone either here or on the 56J mailing list saying a couple
years ago that they had figured out a way to either acid etch or
sandblast the original PPG markings into replacement glass; does anyone
remember that discussion and is that stuff available?  I still have
this weird compulsion to make my '55 100% street legal and don't want
to have any issues with replacement glass.  Yes, I know, historic
plates (got 'em already) I just think it'd be kind of cool to run the
thing through inspection just to prove a point.  Plus then I wouldn't
have to worry about getting popped if I chose to drive it to work some
day.

Unmarked glass will pass inspection as long as it safety glass of
some type.

Nate, check out www.glasslinks.com/newsinfo/autoglass_types1957.htm

Rather interesting information there...

Find a screen printer who has a Rowland Cutter and have him make you a few
heavey vynl stencils, don't tell him they are stencils, make up a story.
Once you got them, I will send you down a strange looking "toy" air brush
and a pound of abrasive. Stick the stencil on the glass, put cheap masking
tape about 8 inches all around the area. Then turn on your air compressor to
about  10 to 16 lbs and spray thru the stencil. It will etch the glass and
look perfect.

The abrasive is so fine it makes table salt look like boulders.  The kit is
made by Badger. They took their cheapest air gun, opened the hole a couple
of "tads" and attached a two ounce bottle.

n8, you can buy the glass from o.e.m. glass inc in bloomington, ill
with the correct date codes for just a little more than unmarked
versions. my last number for them is 309 662 2122. just furnish them
the month and year your car was built and they will take it from there.
they provided the glass for my one of my 53's which is the same as your
55 so i know they will have what you want. ed

FYI this is their web site:

http://www.oemglass.net/

their price for all six pieces would be $360 without markings, $540
with, the "other guy" sells them on eBay for $195 + $50 shipping...

That's some expensive etching.
