Is this a continuation or a remake of the original Battlestar Galactica that starred Lorne
Greene, and ran in the '70s?
That show was pretty hokey at the time, IIRC.

The new (2003) Battlestar Galactica is a re-interpretation, from the start.
Battlestar Galactica from '78 did not start out hokey, just devolved
into standard 70's hokum. If you are interested, you should attempt to
find the 2003 mini-series that started the new BG series (most video
stores should have access to it) it's not a bad show, not as good as
Firefly was, but it's managed to stay on the air.
It is an interesting re-interpretation.
The Cylons are no longer the product of a reptilian civilization,
destroyed by their creations, but rather, the result of man's own
hubris, the Cylons, self-aware machines, are the former worker class,
risen against their creators.
The Cylons have developed their own god and mythos, developed organic
based units (12 different models) for covert operations, that appear and
act human, yet are effectively immortal due to the cybernetic nature of
their minds.
It's more of a political drama then a shoot-em up.

This is a remake, some of the same themes from the original series are
still there, but it has been SERIOUSLY upgraded. I agree that the
original series was pretty hokey, but the new one is top notch. Many
of the characters names are the same, but the roles are all quite
different. Edward James Olmos is the anchor of the cast and he plays
the role of Admiral Adama (Lorne Greene's part in the original
series). The pilot mini-series is out on DVD as well as the first
season and half of season two. I'd reccomend starting from the
begining if you are interested.
