I am having some difficulty identifying the engine in my '50 2R5. The
(stamped) engine number is 1R76168 which, as per the reference found at
the SDC website (http://www.studebakerdriversclub.com/tech_6data.asp),
indicates it is a "1949/1953 2R series Commercial 170'" unit. Am I
correct in that this means blocks with this serial range were cast in
'49 or '53?* Given that there is more than one year in which the block
may have been cast, I am further assuming the casting number can be used
an a secondary identifier...? Is this accurate? The (raised) casting
number on my block is 524807-4, but I have yet to find any resrouce with
which I can cross-reference this information. Provided the above
assumptions are correct, I would like to know if there exists a list of
Champion engine casting numbers that I may use to precisely identify my
engine.
I hade made an effort to find this information myself (via searching the
SDC and Truck Talk forums, and a.a.studebaker archives), but have come
up empty handed thus far. I appreciate the help and information the NG
denizens have provided me with thus far, and allow me to apologize in
advance for the slew of questions I'm bound to post before my project is
completed. :)
Thanks.

*I'm assuming that if these blocks were cast in '49 THROUGH '53, the
notation on the list would read "1949-1953 2R series Commercial 170'"
instead.

Wrong assumption, it means 49-53 serial range, the number seems about
right for a 1950 engine.

Really? Well I'll be damned. Methinks the notation on that page should
be changed, then; as it is now, it's deceiving.
But what about pinning down the year? Is it possible to do so through
engine casting numbers? Or, perhaps there's a record of what number
ranges were produced in what years? Really, it's all academic; I don't
HAVE to know, but am really curious.
Maybe I'll just cough up the cash for the Production Order from the
museum....

That motor is a LATE 1951 motor. The first # for the 52 models is
R5-78579. So your's is most likely a late 1951. (Just a few #'s lower)

Awesome! Thanks! How do you know that, by the way? Is that info
available on the web? I'd like to know so if, in the future somebody
asks me the same question I can help them out as you have me.

Casting numbers usually only give you a basic identification. For
instance, 527807 was used from 1949 or 50 to 1954. Look for a date code
on the distributor side of the block, near the top, probably near the
front, but maybe near the rear. It will be four digits (X X XX). That
is: a letter, a space, a number, a space, two numbers.
