Bought it for $500.  Since it has 4 (supposedly) NOS fenders and the
foglights, etc., should I just just strip it OR  should I take a good
ignition switch and a new battery up there and see what happens?

South Bend is a long way from San Antonio!

Strip it at SASCO and shoot it in the head. You might at least break  if
you don't have to ship the rust west.  You'll need more then a switch
and a battery for a South Bend car. You'll need some plywood for the
floors, all new brake and fuel lines, maybe a gas tank. To be honest, I
wonder if you'll come out right side up on the car that far away.

The engine/tranny/rear axle, bumpers/grille and glass are the main items
of value.  The glass should be tinted (most Presidents were).  Oh, and
don't forget the real stabilizer bar but the brackets/bolts will
probably be pretty rusty.  The dash looks pretty good in the photo
but...  Are you planning on going to SB to strip it?

it would be cheaper to pay someone close (Lee D.?) to part it for you
than to even spend the gas $$ to travel there.
Fieronut - 30 Jul 2006 02:00 GMT
You all may be right--maybe it's just best to part it out.  However, I
enlarged the pix and it seems to me that all the significant rust is in
the fenders--of which I have 4 news ones.

Without seeing it in person, it's hard to determing the frame, trunk or
floor situation but I think I'll check it out in person before I make a
decision.  I have to be in that part of the country before the National
anyway.  Then if it's junk, I'll (or someone can) strip it and go from
there.

Thanx for all the advice, however.

John,

I am 90 miles from South Bend so, if you need someone to give it an
eye, take pictures, or pick it up and store it til you are in the
area, drop me a line and let me know.

Lee,

The guy told me that the tires would probably not make it to San
Antonio but not sure about your place.  However, I think I might want
you to take it to your place and then we can decide what to do with it.
Remember, it also has those 4 extra fenders to take with you.

When I pay this guy, I'll get an address for you.  As of now, we are
discussing title, etc, BEFORE I pay him.  He says he has one but can't
get a good scan......Also, after you get it, if you wouldn' t mind
taking some CLEAR pix, that would be nice.

What do I owe you for the tow?  Contact me at Fieronut at aol dot com.

Thanx, Lee.

I think you are being a tad optimitic about even a 90 mile drive,
but Texas, you have to be joking. <g> ( I know South Bend cars, had
enough rusted brake lines blow in my youth)

If it has significant rust is in the fenders then it also has significant
rust is in a lot of other places.

BTDT, you'll find there is no cowl left to bolt the front fenders to.

Cheap AC!  ;-)

John
fieronut@aol.com - 31 Jul 2006 15:14 GMT
How-some-ever, the cowl is not the prob.  This car was never
transferred to the "ebay seller".

The "ebay seller" has a title from the prev owner showing he paid $1500
for the car, so if I DO fix it and register it in TX, will have to pay
tax on $1500--AND--since it was never transferred to the "ebay seller",
theoretically, I need to locate the PREV owner to sign the TX title
application.

Suddenly, this is becoming a very complicated situation.

Run Forrest!  Run!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
John Poulos - 31 Jul 2006 19:27 GMT
Just sign the PO'ers name on the title, unless you suspect something is
amiss.

No, I think it's probably OK but the "ebay seller" says he can get the
previous OWNER to apply for a new title, then we can start WITHOUT the
$1500 price AND there is a word crossed out.  At the bottom of the
title, it says, "If there are erasures, alterations, blah blah blah,
etc....don't accept this title."

All in all, it just wasn't done right when the "ebay seller" bought the
car and so I have to wait until it IS right.  There is no hurry.  Lee
is gonna help me with it so everything will EVENTUALLY be OK.

Are you sure that it's worth the effort?  Mark Frank has a couple of '55
Prez State sedans that are restorable without any of the bad rust issues...

Grumpy AuContraire - 31 Jul 2006 21:22 GMT
If the title is not signed, it is not clear and thus a way out regarding
this auction.  OTOH, In TX, a sig is a sig...

The PO signed the title when the "ebay seller" bought it from him for
$1500.  BUT..he put $1500 as the selling price and crossed out a word.
So for those 2 reasons, I'm gonna have them give me a new title.  I
really want the car, if for no other reason than the parts I get with
it.  But I have plenty of time.  I'll wait until it's done right.
