Clutch?

Having not much experience with Studebaker six cylinder cars and running
gear I have to ask these questions.

Can larger pressure plates be used with the original smallest
clutch/pressure/flywheel set up for the 170cid?

I have the 8" clutch and pressure plate. Will the flywheel handle an 8.5" or
larger setup without changing the flywheel? Are any of the bolt patterns the
same? Can the original flywheel be used by drilling new holes for the
pressure plate?

I see from the chassis parts manual that Studebaker used the same flywheel
for std. transmission six cylinders for 69, 62-64. Although in 62-64 an 8.5
clutch was used. Does this use the same bolt pattern?

What I want to do is keep the original bellhousing and flywheel but use a
bigger clutch.

Thanks for any help,

Wiz.

The taxi cabs used a bigger cluch, check withe SASCO to see what
flywheel and bell housing was used. You might be able have your flywheel
redrilled if the bell housing is the same.

John- I believe that the taxi cabs used the V8 bellhousing with the special
adapter plate that replaces the normal six cylinder rear engine plate. I
think too that the 8.5" pressure plate is assembled with the same cover as
the 8" pressure plate so no drilling of the flywheel should be necessary.

Paul,
Thats only when the 10.5 clutch was used(used only with the V8
bellhousing and tranny). The specific parts are addressed in the parts book.

They even list a different engine block for the taxi.
