I decided to install a 289 I had laying around in the 51 and make it
look like a stock 232. Converted to 4 bolt rockers, took the check
valves out of the stock fuel pump to use it as a "pass through" from the
late pump.
I'll use a 55 water manifold to clear the late pump, but it'll
still have the early thermostat housing. I'll add the 62 2 barrel for
the correct jetting under the stock air cleaner.

You'd better not look that close. <g> I think having the extra 90 HP
will out weight the numbers issue.

If it's a DG200 automatic you may have too much power for the tranny.

I checked with folks in the know (Ted Harbit) and it's strong
enough. He once used it for drag racing a ragtop without a issue.

Did you figure out what the problem was with the original motor? The cat is

No, gave up and going to swap the damn thing. I'm betting it was the
cam, buy liked the idea of a 289 in it better anyway.

Not a good judge, they can even ID the late exhaust manifolds.

I believe the water outlet for a '55 is narrower than for '56 up
vehicles and might present a cooling issue. '56 and later outlets had
the wider neck for the bigger engines...

He'll need to use the original one anyway so the hose will fit. In any
case I used the '55 outlet (they were small up until 1961? I think?)
in my 289-powered '55 still with sketchy looking original radiator with
no apparent cooling issues.
nate
(still probably ought to have it at least recored for the R1 though...
was going to buy a Rodney Red one but he wants me to send the original
for a pattern, and I don't have an extra)

The outlet is considerably larger in my '56 Power Hawk as opposed to the
'55 Prez sedan. There was radiator upgrade (size) in 1956 IIRC.

You are just talking about the thermostat housing, not a big deal.

Well, the radiator was certainly taller, but IIRC the hose size
remained the same.

Maybe later, but it must have changed when they went to the two bolt
thermostat housing much later, 55-58 at least were the same part number.
