The mechanic doing the safety would not pass the Hawk. Needs upper and Lower
control arm bushings. There is quite a bit of play in the front wheels. He is
recommending the entire front end. Front springs are weak also, the lower
control arm is parallel to the road surface and the car is riding low.

Are Fairborns Front springs different from Stude Int. I would like to put in
the Super Hawk springs. Are these just the Heavy duty springs? There is a $50
difference.

Should I just cut to the chase and purchase the "special front suspension
kit" from Stude International?

If you are on a budget you can probably get by with just the new rubber
bushings, upper kingpin thrust bearings, and lower kingpin seals.  how
lucky do you feel?

I highly recommend the HD springs, but I'm not sure who sells what.

Try SASCO for the springs and parts, the kit is way too expensive.

Not very lucky. Road Safety is a huge deal up here. I want to do it right and
I'm sure the safety mechanic will want it done right too.

I didn't mean like that, I meant that if the suspension was kept
properly greased, the trunnions and kingpin bushings are probably fine.
Even if the kingpin bushings are a little worn this is not a huge
safety issue as they can't fail catastrophically like ball joints can.
The thing is, you won't know until you can get in there, and if you
don't order everything you will need something you didn't order; and if
you do order everything you will find everything in good condition
except for the common wear items (basically the stuff I said you'd
need.)

Of course, there are exceptions, like my '55 coupe, where the lowers
were seized up and actually snapped the lock pin and wore out the lower
knuckle...  I really did have to go through the whole suspension on
that car.

Thanks Nate. Yep is Murphy's law. What I don't order I'm going to need. I'm
ordering the king pin bushing kit, Upper outer and inner pin bushings and
Lower outer and inner bushings. For the extra $25 bucks I'm going to order
the sway bar bushings too. I am going to use the HD front springs also. Wait
and See I may need those King pins yet ! Canadian Studebaker here in Ontario
has every thing but the swaybar bushings and the springs. If I need the king
pins they are a day away for a good used set. I'm passing on the tie rod ends
right now since I have to go and buy a Mig Welder to patch a couple of small
holes in the driver's side floor. I'm just going to cut out a 6x4" patch. I
always was looking for a good excuse to buy a mig. Just have to sneek it in
the garage like I did with the Hawk! Looks like JP's carpet set is on hold
for a day or two.
