When Studebaker advertised the package Lark and Hawk they stated 132
MPH with the Lark and 140 MPH with the Hawk.  Doesn't it seem the Lark
should be the faster of the two?

The Lark is brick aerodynamically.

All other things being equal (transmission, rear end, etc.) I would
expect the Lark to be *quicker* but even with the big, upright grille I
suspect the Hawk would be more aerodynamic thus the higher top speed.  A
53-54 coupe or hardtop with the same drivetrain would probably be the
best combination of factory parts for highest top speed.

What's the top speed of an R2 Avanti?  I would suspect that it would be
higher than either, even though the Avanti is heavier, due to its being
almost as aerodynamic as the 53-54.

R2 Avanti record was 160 mph IIRC (back in 1963)

From what I have read if the same running gear was in all cars the speed
would rate as, slowest to fastest,:

1. Lark
2. Hawk
3. Avanti
4. 53/4 coupe.

It's all aerodynamics at this point.

I think so, although I'm going on memory that the early coupe was
actually slipperier than the Avanti.  It was pretty close, either way,
so that would be a good race!

Hi,

The speeds advertised by Studebaker for the R-2 powered cars with the
same gearing
was:  Lark -132, Hawk - 140,  Avanti - 158.

The Avanti is more slipppery than the coupe.  It has an estimated
coffecient of drag of around .38 compared to the coupe's estimated 4.0
-4.2.  Even if the cd's were the same.
the Avanti presents a smaller frontal area and thus pushes less air.

What gearing got them those speeds?

Remove the studebaker to email.

3.07 would take you to over 150 MPH at 6000 RPM.

If I remember correctly,  the R3 record Avanti used a 2.87 gear, which
worked out to about 7000 RPM at 171 MPH. I bought that rear end from Joe
Granatelli about 1968.

Agreed.

I think that was proven by the ill-fated attempt by running a (Blake)
Avanti in the Datona (24 hours???) in the early 1980's.  Despite be
given a lousy pole position, the Avanti quickly began to pass most of
its competition but later suffered a catostrophic electrical failure,
(car spun out), but managed to finish the race.

I never appreciated aerodynamics so much till i started drag racing slot
cars, just 1/8 inch in height made a big difference in times, My
favorite slot car was a hard body 53 Stude coupe that won many races in
its class,

Low & Go.
