What is the Difference in the McCulloch and the paxton superchargers
used on the studes?

Thanks, James Maxey III

Same company, just renamed to Paxton later. The major difference as far
as Studebaker versions are concerned are that the VS 57 McCullock was a
variable ratio, the Paxton SN 60 was fixed.

Mc.Culloch used to make chainsaws also.
When they sold that division they also sold the name Mc Culloch.
Paxton Mc.Culloch simply used his first name to market his
superchargers.
In 1957-58 Golden Hawks the supercharger (using the Mc.Culloch name)
had a variable speed pulley system that sped the supercharger up when
you
punched down on the pedal.
This was done to save energy when the supercharger was not needed.
Later is was determined that the pressure from the supercharger
actually
helped push the pistons down and most of the energy was recovered that
way.
In 1963-64 using the Paxton name the superchargers were constant speed
and were much simpler not having the dozens of parts needed for the
variable
pulley setup.

Interesting site on superchargers.      http://www.vs57.com/

I stock most parts for both kind of superchargers.

The Paxton name actually came from  the middle name of Robert Paxton
McCulloch.
Sherwood Egbert was a corporate officer , perhaps vice president, at
McCulloch before coming to Studebaker in 1961.
