For some reason this blurb from the printed story just cracked me up.
"the man was racing on the salt flats with some sort of vehicle contraption
when he wrecked."

I know Scott Griswald the driver of the Chevette that crashed. He
would get a good laugh out of this pitiful piece of reporting. The car
is, of course, a Chevette in name only with a much modified body that
looks closer to a streamliner than a production automobile. Scott, as
well as others, have driven that car at Maxton many times over the
years. It holds a lot of records. It is now toast. A complete loss,
from what I have been told. It was for sale prior to this. I don't know
what Ace Allen, the owner, is going to do with what is left of it.
The word I have received is that Scott flew home Saturday, I think.
Bruised and battered, but doing well. The results could surely have
been m uch worse. Those of us associated with ECTA held our collective
breath when news of the crash got out. After last year we were afraid
to think of could have happened.

Joe,
Thanks for the info fill in...
I have a few long term goals that are closer to getting accomplished than
they were a couple of years ago....
One is some Maxton participation...
A 300 mile jaunt is a ton easier than a 500 mile jaunt...
The brethren of speed at both Maxton, Bonneville, El Mirage, and Muroc is
impressive.
Maybe not driving, or with my own Stude, but to be able to seriously
participate in the quest for Stude speed.
Futile as that may sound, it is a personal quest.
Glad Scott is doing OK. Give him my best...

Salt racers hate when the media muddy the waters with poop like
this.....
itraseecab@aol.com - 24 Aug 2006 13:39 GMT
And it happens all the time. Last year when John Beckett died in a
horrible crash at Bonneville, a local Salt Lake City paper called the
car a Crosley. It was not, it was based on an old Honda (the first
little tiny things they shipped here). That story was picked up across
the country, even though many people tried to correct it. The crash
and the death were the stories details don't seem to matter.
The thing I think Scott would find humorous was the comment about the
"contraption" he was driving.

And do you think this is an accurate discription of the Chevette that they
are reporting?
"According to the Tooele County Sheriff's Office, the man was racing on the
salt flats with some sort of vehicle contraption when he wrecked."

Let's not forget that for years the Hearst Newpaper empire had standing
orders from the top to savage ANY kind of auto racing in print -
especially any racing that involved a mishap.
Now the problem is media competition forces them to hype any kind of
bad news in an effort to raise ratings, or increase sales. Plain old
greed plays a large part in this stupid behaviour.
itraseecab@aol.com - 24 Aug 2006 19:17 GMT
No I would not considerate a "contraption" because to me than
insinuates it was a haphzardly thrown together thing. The basic car
has been around for several years in one form or another. Since Ace
Allen purchased it, the car has been almost entirely rebuilt. This
occured about 4 years ago. The car has run at 200+ at both Maxton and
Bonneville many times with no problem. I don't think we know yet what
happened this year at Bonneville.
