Toshiba does not offer a 12 volt adapter for my laptop. I'm thinking of
buying the 75 watt inverter sold by Radio Shack. Does this setup have the
potential to harm a laptop? Any recommendations for something better? (I
got Streets and Trips last month for my birthday)

You need to check to see how many watts your computer runs. Mine is
over 100, so I use a 300 watt inverter (one that large is probably not
necessary) and it works very well when my wife is driving. Assuming we
are on the Interstate, I can get online and stay online pretty
well...unless there are mountains or tunnels.
I really think that 75 watts is too small for your computer. By the
way, I got my inverter at Walmart in the auto parts dept..

Way too small for a laptop.
Get an inverter that has a cooling fan built in.
Skip Radio Shack and get one from an auto supply chain.
For Example, you can get a 400 watt inverter for $24.99 at Advance Auto
Parts.

Hope the info helps.

Get the biggest one you can afford.
You will use the dickens out of it.
Cell phone chargers, drills, small TVs, etc etc etc.

Thank all of you for the input. I didn't realize I would need that much
power. That's what CC wanted to sell me, but I didn't think I needed that
great big box taking up space. I got this whole idea when I saw a Super
Shuttle driver using it.

I bought a Belkin 300 Watt Max 140 Constant, paid $39.95 for it. Has a fan
for cooling, an auto type fuse in the back etc.
There are a ton of laptobs that do not have air/car adapters. Worse yet, is
most airlines have stopped providing power outlets for laptops.

What are the specs of the AC power supply that came with your laptop?
surely there is a better way than using an inverter; they're
inefficient, take up space and create lots of heat. for instance my
laptop's power supply says that it provides 6.3A at 19V. I would think
it would be easier to try to find a generic power supply that provides
the correct voltage and amperage; ASSuming that you're going to keep
this particular laptop a while.
This looks interesting, but of course it's outside the US...

(also probably won't run my own laptop, as it's a power hungry P4 - I
don't know how much power my laptop actually draws, but (19)(6.3) =
over 100W)
just seems easier to use something purpose built for a job rather than
using an inverter to power another transformer and rectifier, with each
having its own built in inefficiencies...

Toshiba might not offer the adapter for their 15 Volt laptops, but there
are plenty made and sold by others.

I've been running a 500w/1000w peak inverter in SuperDually for 18
months and a 400w/800w in Debbie's car and the ragtop for a year.
Never a trouble with either using the AC power supply that came with
my laptop.
Personally, I'd never buy some 'fits all' power supply and trust its
quality/polarity/plug style to be OK for my laptop.

I was thinking more along the lines of the efficiency would come in
handy if one were still running a 40A alternator, or even a generator.
In a modern vehicle with a huge 100+ amp alternator it's less of a
concern how efficient the inverter/power supply combo is.

That is a good point but on the 1400 mile round trip to Martinsburg
and back a couple weeks ago I was running my 400 watt inverter in the
ragtop. City traffic, highway, etc... Even at idle (650 RPM) with my
old generator and mechanical regulator, I never got a discharge
condition with it running.

I think what you will find is a 'pure' laptop converter (like the Targus)
will run you over a hundred bucks.
For a quarter of that you can get a 110v inverter that will run your laptop,
or a little drill, or a blender, or a sex toy, or a.......

My computer requires 89.3 watts. I asked the fellow who sold me the computer
what about a USB power supply. He said no.
Told me to go get a power inverter. When I had the Dell Inspirion 8100, I
purchased THEIR (Dell's) Car/Plane power supply.
The first time I used it, I got a warning screen that the power from the
converter was not equal to the demands of the computer.
I called them, and they said, yes they knew it wasn't pwerful enough under
certain circumstances.
