Nope, the R-2 has dished pistons to lower the compression, you
can use the thick standard 289 head gaskets to lose about a half point,
hardly worth the effort. I have had no luck with 104 + on my R-1, but I
bought a case of real lead at the flea market and with 94 octane Sunoco
I end up with about 100 real octane and that seems to work fine. You
may
have to retard the spark 4 to 6 degrees to get it to run on the junk
that passes as gasoline today.

The R2 actually uses the same piston as the R1,the head itself has a
larger combustion chamber on the R2. Try setting your timing for full
advance with the engine at around 3000-3400 rpm and vacuum advance
disconnected. I don't remember the exact spec but I think it was
34degees?? Also the Prestolite distributors are notorious for wearing
out advance wts. Were these replaced during the rebuild?

I stand corrected the standard 289 used the dished pistons and
all
R-1 and R-2's used the same flat top piston. My confusion came from the
pistons in my last R-1, they were the new "Avanti style" slipper
pistons
with a dish to run on todays fuel. If you could find a set of R-2 heads
you'd end up with a 9 to 1 R-1 engine.

Does using R2 cylinder head gaskets lower the compression ratio on an
R1
Avanti Engine? If so, what all is involved besides putting the new
head
gaskets on? On my 1963 Avanti, with the engine timing set to factory
specs or changed to 2 degrees adjustment which is where it seems to
otherwise run and idle the best, it pings like crazy during
acceleration.
I am using Amoco Ultimate Premium and 104 + Octane booster, and it
still
pings real bad. The prestolite dual point was recently rebuilt & I had
my mechanic set the dwell and points for me using the specs in the shop
manual. Thanks.

Reply: We sell flat top pistons that are cut down to lower the
compression.

I thought it was interesting the the Indiana Jones of R engines (Nelson
B.) used to post on here.
