Please explain what a "clover leaf block" is.

They were replacement engines sold by the factory. Could they be called
crate engines?

The cloverleaf stamp indicated heavy duty components ie these engines
were replacement heavy duty truck engines.

The number 84 is inside the clover leaf symbol. Does anyone know what
the number means?

I found another clover leaf symbol stamped in the block while cleaning
sludge off the engine. This one is back bt the distributor whole on
the flat surface. Evidently, Studebaker stamped these clover leaf
blocks all over the place. That is the 3rd one I've found.

To Joe R.
Here is a link to a previous thread on clover leaf engines. The shops
that did the replacement would stamp the original ser. number onto the
new block next to the clover leaf. Some did and some didn't. My 289
has only the clover leaf and no number.
The thread is under the title "What do engines number mean? - engine

Tony -
How is the GT Hawk coming along? No news since the stolen transmission
incident several weeks ago. Did you get another tranny for it or what?
You've gotta get that thing running again...I want to see my old "Baby"
on the road!
