Did Granatelli use an R4 intake to build the R5?

The answer is no. The R-5 was not even carburated. It used fuel
injection parts from a Cessna engine. I believe it had 2 seperate log
type manifolds .One for each cylinder bank. I have info on this in a
Dick Datson book ,"How to HotRod the Studebaker V-8" .He has pictures
in there of it. If you know anyone with a copy of the book have a look
at it. Maybe with todays computer fuel management systems connected to
an R-5 it would have broken the magic 200 mph mark ?

There is a Studebaker motor in the Speedway Motors Museum in Lincoln
Nebraska that looks like that. If that motor is an R5 we will know in a
couple of weeks as there is a tour though the museum scheduled during
the SDC Internation Meet in Omaha.

The Stude engine in Lincoln I believe is the still born JC Aghajanian
Indy 500 OHC/4v/cylinder job.

Hi,

I thought Andy modified a Bendix injection unit from a Novi engine for
the R-5
fuel delivery.

Bendix injection units were used on aircraft primarily.

When I was picking up my R-3 engine at the Museum in May Andy Beckman and I
were talking about my R-4.  He told me that they had researched the numbers
on it and they determined that the intake manifold was cast in 1961 (??).

My casting number is 1555811.
Is that directly date readable or was there a cross reference?

I had one for several years, bought it and the carbs from Paxton 35+
years ago.  However I had to get the prints for the linkage and choke
heater from SASCO in South Bend.  I fabricated all of that and had a
complete assembly sitting on the bench.  Never installed, finally sold
it to somebody, dunno who at this late date, but I would recognize the
assembly if I ever saw it again.  Probably still have those prints
somewhere.  The R4 used a different accelerator pedal to bellcrank rod
too.  Made that even.  Still have it I think.

The air cleaner usually seen with the R4 is a Chevy unit, as that is
what was finally supplied by AC to Stude.  Originally Stude was to have
their own design, but they canceled that order with AC and took the
off-the-shelf unit.

How can I tell if it is a repro or an original?
Are the repros significantly different in appearance from that one?

Only repros I've seen were semi-finished, but they looked very similar.
Unlike the single 4bbl repros, the R4 repros actually do have a
functional exhaust heat passage.

The repro casting is much rougher and unfinished looking and needs
some touch up machining.  BTW, someone hit $1000 BIN.
