I have been checking on my options for a new stude garage for my
property in SC and Quonset Hut type buildings seem to offer biggest
bang for the buck. So who here has one or has time in one for
pros/cons and also best price (40' x 60'). Thanks!

The only drawback I can find with the round quonset hut type is that lack of
flat walls other than on the ends unless you install them. A friend of mine
bought one of the "erector set" type of steel buildings a few years ago and
it came with 12' sidewalls and was a 30x40 and his father-in-law ordered the
60x40 shop/carport kit. They're both happy, but I like the style with the
traditional roofline rather than the wrap the roof tin over to the wall
style like they have. I worked around several round type quonsets in ND
that were used for machine sheds or grain storage... as far as I can tell
they'll withstand anything Mother Nature will throw at it unless you damage
the end walls.

Dave has an older Quonset building for his shop. Hopefully he'll be
checking in from the Meet and can answer some of your questions!

As it turns out, the last three issues of Auto Restorer has gone
through how to
design, contract, and build an "ideal garage." As an engineer, I was
pleased with the
attention to the little things that cannot be fixed without significant
cost, if at
all after the concrete is poured. They did not use a Quonset type, but
do not let that deter you, the only thing that is different is the
shape of the walls.

Calvin,
That is what I have. It is 40 ft wide x 30 ft long x 14 ft 7" tall on the
inside in the middle of the arch. It is relatively easy to construct.
Everyone says you will loose a lot of floor space because it is rounded on
the side, but you don't even with the old curved sides style like I have.
The worst problem is insulating it. The best way to insulate it is to have
foam sprayed on, which is very expensive. When I built mine I ordered the
solid back wall and studded up the front. I put in 2 roll up doors and a
walkin door in the center of the front. My 2 sons added vinyl siding to the
front around 2 years ago. If I was going to build a new shop I don't think I
would build another Quonset.
