Lee - 27 Nov 2006 02:36 GMT Well, it had to happen sooner or later....
After 10 years of ownership and a LOT of happy miles, I decided it was time to let the Pace Car clone convertible find its way to a new home (and it almost did). With the purchase of the '63 R2 4-Speed Wagonaire in September, I knew I had to let one car go and the Pace Car was the least rare of what I have here so it drew the short straw.
I cleaned it up a bit (did not need much) and took the e-Bay photos and listed it 3 days ago. Last night, I got a call from a guy who wanted to come and look at it in person before bidding. He showed up today at noon and, lo and behold, it was the son of the guy I bought it from 10 years ago! HIS son saw it on e-Bay and just knew it was grandpa's old Studebaker and he was right. Rocky made the trip up and looked it over, heard it run and told me some fun old car stories then went home to see if he could talk his wife into one more car. It seems he did because he just hit the Buy It Now.
I am really glad to see it go somewhere that it will be cherished like a family heirloom (since that is basically what it is to them) and wish him many happy years of ownership and miles traveled.

Bob - 27 Nov 2006 02:45 GMT A happy ending. Rather nice to see it go back home.

Studebaker-r2-4-me - 27 Nov 2006 02:48 GMT Congrats Lee! I still know where my first car is an would love to have the old girl back My 64 Daytona is being driven by a 21 year old and has had the car since he was 15. He is one of the new generation that another NG was hoping to get involved with Studebaker's. I know my old Daytona is well looked after and know that he would never sell it back to me too!

Lee - 27 Nov 2006 03:10 GMT My first Studebaker was my Dad's last new Studebaker... a 1962 Lark Regal convertible. He gave it to me on my 16th birthday and I still have it, may never get it restored, but am damned sure I'll never sell it!
I bought Dad another '62 Lark Regal convertible and, someday soon, I hope to have it done and sitting in his garage.... When he is done with it, I'd like to have that car back.

Pat Drnec - 27 Nov 2006 04:02 GMT What a nice ending to a potentially sad tale - don't worry, another 62 Daytona is likely to find it's way to you eventually. I really like that car....

Lee - 27 Nov 2006 04:23 GMT Thanks Pat... I really like the car as well and, if we get a nice day or two, I may have to take it out one more time before he picks it up.
Actually, the guy who bought my '57 Golden Hawk is from the LA area and has a '62 Lark HT, rust free, of course, that he is interested in selling and make me a good offer on the car, delivered to Fort Wayne as he is coming after the GH soon. I am seriously considering buying that car and am waiting for pictures.

Lee - 27 Nov 2006 17:25 GMT Debbie really wanted me to sell her car, the cop car, instead of the Daytona.... As I told her, the convertible was NOT a real pace car and nowhere near as rare as the cop car is (being one of 8 known survivors of 22 built). She reluctantly agreed but that is not to say the cop car won't get sold someday.

I need to get my '63 2-door sedan Lark (original california car) cleaned up for e-Bay now that you mention that....

Lee - 27 Nov 2006 18:06 GMT I'll put your name on the list, Pat... I swear I have over a dozen people who want that car when we are done with it!!
It sure is an interesting piece of history and a lot of fun but, to tell the truth, I have NO idea what something like that is even worth. The only one I've ever seen sell that is equipped like hers is now in my garage.

Dan Peterson - 27 Nov 2006 22:53 GMT Lee,
I'm really surprised that you sold the convertible, my guess is that you'll have a case of seller's remorse in the near future.......
BTW if anyone is serious about buying a Pursuit Marshal, Dave Dow of Windsor, VT has his 1964 R1 for sale (the last I knew). It was originally a Maine State Police car. I believe he is asking around $12,000. It's on the cover of the March 2006 Turning Wheels.
Lee - 28 Nov 2006 00:51 GMT Hey Dan,
I doubt I'll have any remorse over this car. I was never emotionally attached to it and if I get the bug to have another ragtop I simply have to go out to the barn and finish one of my other three!
I took it out for an hour's drive before Rocky and his son came to look at it, hoping to get some 'sign from above' telling me whether I should cancel the auction and keep it or let it go. To tell the truth, I enjoyed the drive, as I always have in that car, but felt nothing (and I do mean NOTHING) telling me I should keep it. I think it was truly time to say good-bye to it and move on to my other projects and cars.
That sounds like a fair price on the R1 Marshal in VT.... I don't know that I'd let ours go for any less, to be honest. Ours is not a 'show car' by any means but it is complete, correct, and in very good shape for its age.

Lee - 28 Nov 2006 21:59 GMT Unfortunately, WAY too much ground LOL.....
Whoever wired the lights and sirens on the car did it directly off the BATT terminal of the ignition switch and without a fuse. That has been now fixed, permanantely, by being both fused and through relays.
