Got the Daytona up on the lift, I was curious about the rear end as it
drove so nicely on the freeway - turns out to be a model 27, 3.07. Sure
cruises nicely, but I thought they used a 44 with the V8s.

The standard rear was a 27, at least with the 259. My '62 ragtop was
originally a 27 with 3.07's in it. With the 259/auto, it sure was a
nice driving highway car.

Yep... As far as I can tell, a 289 will come with a 44. I installed a
3.07 on my old Lark Custom and used to get 24 mpg on the highway..

Are the 3.07's hard to find. I would to find one for my '64 cruiser.
It has the 3.31 in it. Were the 3.07's mostly in the hawks, and
avanti's?

3.07s were an optional ratio in any late Studebaker V-8 (maybe even sixes,
but why). A 3.07 makes a much better highway ratio, but does cut
off-the-line performance. I changed my '64 R-2 Avanti automatic from a 3.73
to a 3.07- dramatic improvement in highway cruising,

I have a 3:07 open under my deck, $150.

Hey Pat,
Last time I was over picking up the transmission I noticed you had put some
heat shield/sound deadening mat through some of your cars. What was it and
how well does it work?
As much as I want to keep the weight down on my lark I do want to be able to
hear when I get out.

Dynamat. It does work well, but it isn't cheap.

The Shop manual says my 64 Convertible with 259 V8 used the 27 with
3.07s with 3.73 optional with the 4-spd. The 44 was optional. Mine
was built with the 3.07 27 but somewhere along the way a 3.31 44 was
installed. It is a non TT rear, but plan on installing a 3.73 TT
from Dave Thiebuilt this summer. My 69 CougarXR-7 Convetible 351
4-spd used 3.91s as did my 72 Javelin SST 360
4-spd. 3.73 rears don't bother me and I do like the additional pickup.
