Went to the Napa store, bought the ujoints that they recommended.
The ones with the clips on the outside.

Looked at mine and said,"I think my clips are in the inside." They
said,"Don't worry about it they will fit". "They have used these u Joints
from 1950 on."
Took it apart on Labor day weekend, while they are closed.
NOT the right U joints.
I have a 1962 GT Hawk.
So what part number should I give to a parts person this weekend. And it
needs to simple, for the computers. Like, " I need these for 1988 Mercury
Montego" wink,wink.
Thanks Malcom

You need a Spicer style joint and I think N8 has them on his page.

I thought the Spicer type WAS the type with the clips on the outside.
Mechanics type u-joint has the clips on the inside, right? Sounds like
Malcolm needs the type with the clips on the inside.....Mechanics
type.

yeah I think so and I don't have that part number.  sounds like the car
got a driveshaft from a '63 or '64 at some point in the past.

Something isn't right with the car.  It sounds as if NAPA sold you the
correct Spicer joint, which would fit '62 and prior.  If your
driveshaft has the internal clips, it has the Mechanix joints.  These
were used in '63 and some '64s.  I suspect a later driveshaft was
installed at some point.  Note: The front and rear joints are
different.  The bearing cups in the differential yoke need to be
slightly larger than the shaft cups.  Using a front joint on the rear
can lead to vibration problems.  Expect to pay a lot more for the
Mechanix joints versus the Spicer.

I found the receipt.  On 8/12/95 I replaced the Rear Mechanix joint on
my '63.  It came from NAPA P/N 505.  List $25.42, Net $17.49.  Under
"Line" it lists NUJ.

This should bring closure to identifying the universal joints.  I
found a post it note, in my parts book.  Titled U-Joints:  NAPA 369 -
Spicer. '62 and prior, plus most '64, and all '65-'66.
NAPA 429 - Mechanix front. All '63 and a few '64s.
NAPA 505 Mechanix rear. All '63 and a few '64s

I'll have to make a note of that... the Spicer number matches the one
I have for Precision so NAPA numbers must be the same..

Precision was a good US based (Chicago) company.
They sold out to IFI (Fiat..The old Italian monarchy) in the 70's...
IFI had Chicago Rawhide selling Precision in the 8-'s and 90's...
IFI bought CR in the 70's when the founders of C/R did their IPO on
Safety'Kleen, so C/R U-joints were Precision U-Joints in a green box.
Federal-Mogul (who owns Neapco) bought Precision from IFI.
That's how the numbering system got the way it is....for now... <lol>

OK, I've added the numbers to my interchange; but now I'm curious.  Why
do Spicer shafts use the same joints front and rear but the Mechanics
style have different joints?  What is the difference between the front
and rear Mechanics joints?

The two cups for 505 are slightly larger in outside diameter, for the
differential yoke on the '63.  This would make the cups for the yoke
the same diameter as all of the spicer cups.  Tightening the U-bolts
onto a smaller cup distorts and chips the bolt holes in the yoke. KK

Thanks to all ,who replied.
The rear u joint is probably a 505.
But went to O'Reiley's auto parts and their 429 has a larger diameter then I
have. I have misplaced my calipers so I not going to guess the size.  But
the box looked open, so maybe its in wrong box. Will check with the real
parts stores tomorrow. Autozone wouldn't look at it.
Thanks

New Information,
The rear ujoint on the Studebaker is a 505 Napa part #,
It has changed, It is a 201-2140.
And the front Ujoint on this particular Hawk is a 507 Napa part#,
It also has changed, It is now a 210-2011.
So by tomorrow I should have the right ujoints.
