Hi everyone.

I have decided that I will be selling my 1939 Coupe Express. I bought
it a couple of years ago and have been amassing parts for the
restoration. I will probably regret this, but I have come to the
realization that with my business, travel, family and other projects,
I just do not have the time and energy to complete this restoration
project.

The CE is VERY complete. It was an Idaho truck so the body rust is
really minimal. The worst rust is on the floorboards where the Idaho
owner had rubber mats for over 50 years. Considering the age of the
truck and the fact that it has never, to anyones knowledge been stored
inside a garage or even a leaky barn.

The Bad:
When I got it, there was the rust that I mentioned above and all the
glass was cracked except the wind wings. In addition, the rear brakes
had siezed so they were partially disassembled to allow the truck to
be towed and placed on a car hauler (I believe that I have those brake
parts). The engine has a rather large section of the block that has
been pushed out due to a rather cold Idaho winter and the 80+ year old
owner remembering to drain the radiator but not the engine block. It
was missing a rear bumper, one of the engine side panels with trim,
the running boards and few other little bits. The tail gate is there,
but dented and cracked.

The Good:
Since I purchased the truck, I have aquired the following:
A running 1939 Commander engine that has been cleaned and repainted
the original Studebaker green.
A reproduction tail gate
All the glass, NEW, not used
Running Boards (the metal is good, but they need new rubber)
The engine side panel and missing trim
A NOS carburetor in the original box
Fog Lamps
One replacement drivers side grill (the original has one broken fin
and could be repaired easily)
Door latch hardware (drivers door latch needs work)
And an assortment of other stuff, like a coil, glove box lock etc,
etc.

My friends are trying to talk me into just putting the engine in,
going through the suspension and brakes and driving it as a "Rat Rod"
or 68 year old original, but I just can't bring myself to do it. The
lines on the truck are so great that it really desirves to be put back
on the road as the proper, beautiful machine that it was in '39.

The truck is located at my house in the Santa Cruz, CA area. I am
about 40 minutes from San Jose, and will gladly show it to anyone who
wants to come take a look. I will help coordinate shipping, but a full
sized car carrier can not make it directly to my house. It was
delivered here on a single car trailer so that would be OK. I can get
it down the hill using a local auto tow company to meet with a car
hauler as long as we coordinate the timing carefully.

I will be taking some photos of it this afternoon and can send them to
you via email if you want to see some images. I thought I would put it
on the NG first and let everyone here have first crack at it. I am
traveling the first 3 days of next week, leaving very early tomorrow
morning for Pittsburgh and not returning until late Wednesday night.
I will be home today and Thursday - Saturday of next week if anyone
wants to come and kick the tires.

With the running engine, the tailgate and all the parts, I feel it is
worth several thousand more than I paid for it. I will take $18,000
for it from a NG member, and plan to list it on the local Craigs List
and on ebay should it not sell quickly at that price. I will place a
$20,000 asking price on Craigs List and a reserve on ebay.

Feel free to contact me today. I will be out most of the morning
though so if you don't get me, leave a message and I will call back.

I will have photos this afternoon.

Allen,

I am sorry to hear that you are letting your truck go, though I do
understand, as I find myself in a very similar situation with my '37.
There must be something in the air or water as I have seen more CE's
for sale in the last two months than I have in the last two years!

Good luck with your sale.

Regards,

Steve Haugen
