I've been pondering buying a full package, R2 GT Hawk for a month or so,
but could not get the price down the 2K I wanted. Yesterday morning I
went out to the my R2 GT and was greeted with a cold rain. On impulse, I
picked up the phone and booked a room at Caesar's in Atlantic City and
drove up for a day off.
To make a long story a bit shorter I won 5K on two slot jackpots, came
home and called to buy the GT that Caesar helped pay for and the owner
came down $1500 too. Here a sneak peek a "Caesar" my new Superhawk.

Under market value, not cheap by any means, but less then the 25-40K
retail. Over 40K spent in the last few miles by the P.O. with Dave T-Bow.

That is one reason it pays to buy what somebody else has restored, rather
than restoring one yourself    ;)

You still working this weekend or are you staying in AC?  I was
planning on helping you out with the green car but because it's been
raining all week so I haven't graded the side yard like I was planning
on, need to have it done before Tues (A/C installer is coming to put
new unit in then)

When I was in my late teens, SK1 Thomas invited me down to the 2nd
division LQ for my first investment lecture, ie: Crap Game. I lost 2
weeks pay in 20 minutes (but we were at sea for the next twoweeks,
anyhow.)
Except for tossing a $20 note in the $1 machine and pulling the level
20 times at the end of each of Marilyns sessions just to prove I ain't
cheap (which I really am) I don't gamble.
Anyhow, over the past ten years, with you using your skill, JP, how
much do you figure you have won / lost?
All we have heard about is your winings. Obviously, don't count
expenses or perks.
If it's none of my business, feel free to say so.
John Poulos - 27 Oct 2007 02:13 GMT
I do get a win-loss statement from the casino, last year I was ahead
about 13K, plus room/food/ beverage comps, doing better this year, but
it's more like work. If I win big, and it's early in the evening, I quit
gambling and often come home early. If I'm losing, once I get close to
my set limit of losses, I quit. Every pro or simi-pro gambler uses money
management. If you set say a 2K limit on your losses, you can't lose
more, but if you win, say 5K, you're golden. The big money maker is no
limit Texas hold-um if you get a good table full of college kids, just
go all in on a decent hand and they fold up like a tent with their
$100-$200 in chips. <g>  Blackjack has been good to me, but learning all
the Asian games now, Pia Gow/Asian Poker, still working on Baccarat.

Craps and the low money slots are a loser as are high limit slots if you
are on a budget. Only play roulette if Dave Lester picks the numbers for
you. <g>
A five dollar slot can eat $100 in less then a minute, and there are
even $100 slots. I saw a lady put 5K it a $100 slot in 10 minutes and
left and a hour or so later, a guy hit it for 50K with maybe a grand in.
Pat and I use exactly the same system, and neither of us planned it
together, it just is the only way to have a chance. Most everyone will
piss away any money they win and if you do that, you'll never beat the
house. That's why I demand a check for most of my big wins, the casino
can't cash it,(New Jersey law) so I can't lose it.

I've never been a gamblin' type of person.

The closest I ever came to winning stuff was back in my early 20's when
I would go to the track every Saturday. I only won when I used someone
elses picks.  Participate in a raffle...  Not a chance of winning.  Who
sez that birth and revolvin' planets 'n things don't mean anything!

Gambling (to me) is nothing more than 'speculation with discretionary
dollars'.
Since I have few of those I choose not to gamble.
But the few times I have, it is for entertainment purposes only, and
whatever loss there is, is payment in kind for the entertainment value.
I have done rather well on occasion at the horse track, but it was always
with help.
I would read the green sheet and look at the horses percentages and the
jockeys percentages.
Then I would pick three or four in a particular race.
Then the wife and I would go to the paddock before the race and look at the
horses when they are brought out (before they walk them out on the track).
My wife would look at the conformation, the attitude, and the butt and chest
of the horse.
Then we would pick those we thought were best and go to a quinella.
The times we have done that we made enough to pay for our entry fee, valet
parking, and food and drink (which aren't cheap), and walked away 'even'.
That makes me happy.

These new computer controlled slots aren't as interesting to me as the old
mechanical units. Some joker sitting in the back room can change the odds on
you at a whim. I much prefer blackjack but I'm an amateur odds and card
counter. Now if only I had some of that "discretionary" money!

I like the ponies too. I use the methods taught by Bloodstock Research. The
jockey is only along for the ride. It's all about pace and I use that at the
track. My wife and I love the horse races and often go home with the same or
more money than we came with after betting 10 races and having a nice dinner
out at The Keg or the Outback.

Now about that discretionary money...

One Friday evening in the early 1960's while at work, a "consortium"
picked two horses to play for my next trip to the "'ganssett" daily
double. They won and I had wagered $5 for myself and four other
workmates. We each cleared around $200 and you can bet that I left right
after the 2nd race.

Sooooo, the following Friday, the "consortium" got together again and
again, two horses with picked for the following day's daily double.

The picked horse in the first race won but just barely. The picked horse
in the 2nd race was first out of the gate and stayed in front all the
way around and won by about 10 lengths.  Pay off...  $550 per $2 bet and
I again bet $5 for five players.  At the last minute, I bet another $2
for myself and again left after the 2nd race.

The consortium was not in force the following week as the main player
was on vacation.  So, I still went to the track with my usual $30 and
decided to go to the clubhouse rather than grandstand.  I blew the $30
by the end of the third race but I did take time to lean against the
$100 window.....

I never bet on the nags again..

Biggest win for me was the Avanti II I won at York, that was the seed
money for me to get back into Studebakers, second to that was a $9500
jackpot on a five dollar slot in my first five minutes at the casino.

I read part of a book on winning at slots.  The crux of it seemed to be that
if you have 2K to invest, you can win big on almost any quarter slot
machine.

Enough to pay for the hernia surgery as the result of hauling around $2000

Those days are gone.  It's bills or in-house debit cards now.

I miss the sound of quarters showering into a metal pan.

Now if they could turn down the volume on the slot machine
bells/chimes/tunes/etc. and go non-smoking I'd probably be willing to drop
$20 every 4-5 years in Las Vegas.  It takes me about that long to forget why
I left the last time... for me a casino is fun for about 30 minutes.

Arizona casinos I've seen all now have smoking only in one enclosed area.
Smoking is banned everywhere else.

A White Mountain Apache casino named Hon-Dah has the biggest and best
champagne brunch I've ever seen every Sunday.

Arizona Indian casinos are now becoming destination sites.  Many are
building big hotels.  Good on 'em....

I was staying in a small town casino / hotel just outside of Death
Valley. Somehow I wandered into another part of the casino and found
an unocupied room. No one else was there and I cheerfully lost my
money in the machines. The same thing had hapened a few years before
in Reno.

In Holigans (?) next to the Flamingo in Vagas, I suggested to
"someone" that they set up a quiet room where people like us, who like
relative quiet, could play.
He looked at me like I was nuts! Well, others think I am too, when I
mention Studebakers!
(I'm glad I didn't mention having mechanical machines!)

Don't know about quarter slots but that sort of figure seems to work on
the $5 machines most of the time.

It would take me a long time to spend 2K two bits at a time.  I've been up
all night trying to get rid of 40 bucks on quarter slots.

The best I've ever done is 400 bucks with a straight flush....

Ah, you play video poker, that takes a bit of skill and if you are good,
offers better odds than a traditional slot machine.

That's all there is anymore, at least in the Southwest.

I don't remember the last time I saw a quarter slot one-armed bandit.  Five
dollar slots are the only ones with arms I've seen for a long time.  I'm too
cheap to play those(poor).
