Saw this as soon as you posted, got up from the 'puter and drove the Skytop to HF. Didn't go crazy, but got the swing arm magnifying glass with light, the cheapo 4-1/2 grinder as a backup to my (getting noisy) Craftsman, and a few bits and pieces of misc stuff (batteries, brushes, etc). Been wanting one of those magnifiers for a while......eyes are gettin' old<G>!

Barry - 23 Nov 2007 16:18 GMT Wow. What deals on those souvenirs from the Chi-com laogai! They really must only give their imprisoned workers a bowl of wormy brown rice per day to build that stuff! Those sale prices demonstrate that most of the price you ordinarily pay is for mark-up once it gets here, and that it costs the so-called "people's republic" practically nothing to make the stuff. With the rising yuan & the falling $, prices like this for Chi-com imports like this may not be around for long. The weak $ does seem to be good for foreign ebay bidders though, because a good number of my winning bidders have been Euro or Aussie. The way things are selling for me on ebay, I might just owe it to myself to snag a few toys while the wife is away. Have any of you tried out the big cheapo tool box or the "English" wheel? Recently, he bought a couple hammers at H.F. for some of the crew. When they started whacking on some case hardened nails, the nails embedded themselves in the face of the hammer....
Jeff - 23 Nov 2007 17:56 GMT You may well be right..... I sometimes wonder what it was like in the late 1700's to mid 1800's over in Europe when they were importing all of our cheap goods that were cheap because of slavery. They (the Brits, French, Germans, And Spaniards) didn't give a whit about our internal struggles. They just wanted stuff cheap. And they got it. And they are still around today. So, I wonder about our willingness to deride the importation of goods, and in the same breath laud the big selling dollars we can get with our stuff. Sure, it's a dilemna... Sure, it might not last.. (and probably won't, as their raw material cost's and labor cost's won't stay down forever.. So, I am taking advantage of a deal when I can. Besides.... Where else can I get something with good lead based paint on it anymore <lol>... Jeff

Barry - 23 Nov 2007 18:59 GMT A good bit of the HF stuff is powder coated. I will make it a point to keep the wheel & the box inside so the stuff won't begin to peel off in sheets. I'd really prefer the lead paint.. Could you imagine Israel trading with nazi germany if it still existed? Yet Christians in the US will celebrate the birth of Jesus by exchanging gifts which were made by their fellow Christians in China who are imprisoned for their faith. Jews boycotted nazi germany in the 30's, blacks & liberals in the US boycotted So Africa, yet Christians in the US are in WalMart more often than they are in Church. And I'm no better, buying an English wheel from a nation which seeks the destruction of the US, helping those bloody dictators buy more missles, subs, and carriers to eventually take us out, if we don't do ourselves in first.

John Poulos - 23 Nov 2007 19:24 GMT Wages in China are rising way faster then most of the world, they have a rapidly growing middle class now. They are buying cars, computers and the rest at a mad rate. If you recall, Japan was the low wage junk manufacturer not that long ago, and China is headed the same way.

Barry - 23 Nov 2007 22:22 GMT Yes, a friend just visited China for the first time in 10 years, and was amazed at the absence of bicycles & scooters. Everyone is in cars there now, even in smaller cities. Their living standard is rising while ours is sinking due to open borders, "free" trade, and an endless war. BH

Also worked a manager deal on the extra wheel set... <http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf? Itemnumber=95366> Bought a few big rolls of Emery paper to polish intakes, and some grinder wheels and cut off whhels (I'll run 'em slow).. Jeff

Well, Barry, one way to look at it, is that by purchasing Chinese-made goods, you are helping to foster a middle class, which, as it grows, and grows wealthier, will be less tolerant of a government that tries to engage in imperialistic ventures abroad. When you have more to lose, you won't support crazy actions by your government.
Leave the vast mass of China's people in poverty, and they might conclude that there is little to lose in launching a war against Taiwan, or even the USA.

DEEPNHOCK - 25 Nov 2007 13:10 GMT I took a much more simplistic view. I bought back some steel that was one of my old Stude's ground up by a third party. Jeff

Dammit Gord, you know it's just wrong to discuss world politics on this site. Especially when I agree with you.
Barry - 25 Nov 2007 19:11 GMT I think I like Jeff's idea better :-), but the problem w/the red butchers running China is that sans a huge infusion of Westen aid, the only way a nation can build a really formidable war machine is to adopt capitalism, something Chinese people are very good at doing by nature. This is diluting their belief in pure communism, which is why their ecomnomy is rapidly morphing into a facsist-style system in which a certain amount of free enterprize is allowed under tight govermental control, but personal freedom is squelched and all power is in the hands of the ruling elite, reminiscent of Tojo, Hitler, & Mussolini during the 30's, who had a way of dealing with dissidents which was very similar to the way the Chinese handle their dissidents. Such systems have little compunction about invading their neighbors to forcefully take the resources needed for their growing economies. The constant sabre rattling and espionage Chinese leaders direct toward the US does not bode well for an aging society past it's prime and drowning in debt & losing its will to defend itself which is facing the threat of an ascendant power with 5 times the population of the US. Are we are poised to fall like a ripe fruit into the hands of our enemies since we have manufactured & sold them the rope with which they will hang us??
